Amazon today announced the third generation of its line of tablets with the launch of the Kindle Fire HDX. The online retailer will diisponibilizar the new device with screen size to choose from: 7 inch, as the iPad mini, or 8.9 inches, slightly smaller than the traditional iPad.

Kindle HDX 7 inches is available from $ 229 (170 euros), with 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes. But the 8.9-inch starts at $ 379 (280 euros), with the same storage capacity. The new models come two days after Microsoft had renewed its line of tablets, the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2.

For now, the new models appear only in the U.S. Amazon store, but as a result of the launch, the previous models – Fire and Fire HD – are at reduced prices in Europe.

Fire HDX has a quad-core 2.2 GHz, which means it is three times faster than the previous. The battery lasts 11 hours and the screen resolution is greater with dynamic contrasts and image enhancements in brightness and glare. In addition, the 8.9-inch HDX Fire is 34% lighter than the previous generation, weighing only 374 grams.

The rear camera is 8 megapixels and the Fire runs OS 3.0, a system based on Android and modified by Amazon. In both models, you can choose between Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + 4G.
