Here is what you need to know about your new Kindle – Good E-Reader (blog)

kindle-for-christmas

If You Were really good this year, maybe Santa Decided to get you a new Kindle e-Reader. If this is the case, it might be a bit overwhelming. The e-book store has a lot of sections que might not be intuitive, but today Good e-Reader will shed some light on what it all means.

The User-Interface

First of all, lets understand a few elements of the UI That You need to know. Most Kindle e-readers have a built in lightning system que can be accessed by hitting the little light bulb. You can scroll up and down to find the ideal illumination settings to suit your needs.

Additionally, you might notice a little G, this is a shortcut to access GoodReads, Which is the company Amazon Purchased in 2013. On a basic level, it is a social book discovery and community centered around reading. You can Participate in online book clubs and add books you are currently reading to your shelf, and share it with friends. Often, like minded souls randomly connect with each other, due to the common literary interests.

Buying e-books

Upon visiting the Kindle Store for the first team, there are a few key areas such as Kindle Unlimited, Worlds Kindle, Kindle Singles, Kindle and Kindle Freetime Exclusives. The naming conventions Amazon uses, might confuse some users, lets take a look at What They all mean.

Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited, the e-book and audiobook subscription service que lets members pay a flat monthly fee for unlimited access to its catalog, of 700.0000 titles. There is a thirty day free trial and the option to pay $ 9.99 a month for the service. You will find a few good reads here, including the Hunger Games series and all of the Harry Potter books. Major publishers have not committed Themselves yet, so you will find many titles by indie authors.

Amazon launched its Kindle Worlds fan fiction platform just over a year ago, and the concept Has Been a great success for BOTH the Rights holders who license content to the site and the fans who adore the concepts and story lines of Their favorite authors. You can think of an officially sanctioned this the service que has properties such as Vampire Diaries and GI JOE.

Launched in January 2011, Amazon.com’s Kindle Singles Provides an opportunity for reading digital customers to find titles by established bestselling authors and up-and-coming writers alike que fit a very specific need. With publications Whose word counts are limited to between 5,000 words and 30,000 words, Kindle Singles pieces are works que would be Considered far too long for magazine space but are too short to be Considered a traditional novel. The one thing I like about Singles is Their is a editorial process extensive que does not make it easy for just Their anymore to list content on it. You can insure que most of the eBooks listed in Singles are very high quality.

Kindle Freetime Has Been around for awhile, but is entirely new to the Kindle Voyage. It Allows parents to buy into the monthly subscription program que Their Allows kids to download unlimited apps, games, and e-Books. The only thing you can really do on the Voyage though, is just read books. This makes it a really good investment if you own the Fire Phone or one of Amazons Fire tablets, but does not make a whole lot of sense as a standalone service on the Voyage.

Kindle Exclusives feature books que Actually are published with by Amazon via one of Their imprints. They sign established and up and coming authors, selling the books not only on Amazons websites, but bookstores all over the world. There are only a few hundred books listed in this section, so it shouldnt be easy to find something good and They are all affordable. Oh, And we have a fairly cool feature just for Prime members, Read Before Release . It Allows you to read the book in full, a few weeks before its due in October

Borrowing Books from the Library

The Amazon Kindle line of e-Readers has the ability to read e-books That You borrowed from the library, but only if your site branch does business with Overdrive.

Overdrive and Amazon have an exclusive relationship and no other company such as 3M, Baker & amp; Taylor, Hoopla, Zinio and others can deliver Their content in the Kindle compatible format. You shouldnt contact your library location system and find out if They have an e-book collection from Overdrive. Here is how you checkout an e-book.

  • Visit your library’s ‘Virtual Branch’ website
  • In order to login and borrow books you need a digital PIN number, this Normally is received by visiting the library in person.
  • Next, browse for whatever book you want to borrow.
  • Click the ‘Get for Kindle’ button. This opens the Amazon.com website. You may be required to sign in with your Amazon.com account if you are not already logged in.
  • Select a Kindle device or Kindle reading app. Click the ‘Get library book’ button and sync your device or app to download the book, or choose to send it to your device via USB.
  • An active Wi-Fi connection is required for wireless delivery to the Kindle device. If your Kindle is not Wi-Fi capable, or you do not have an active Wi-Fi connection, read Amazon’s instructions for transferring files via USB.

Tips

There are a number of cool Amazon tips That You shouldnt Also be aware of. If you own a model with a touchscreen, you can Actually take screenshots. You simply have to put two fingers in opposing corners and the screen will flash Briefly. You can Also use a 3rd party program called Calibre que will allow you to manually load in books That You download from the internet. The app is available for PC and MAC and Also has the ability to convert books from one format to another

TfL trials Kindle-style electronic ink bus stop displays – Evening Standard

Kindle-style “electronic paper” information displays Could be rolled out on bus stops across London after a trial was launched.

Transport for London is testing the new screens at the bus stop on Waterloo Bridge and . Will Also install the system in Parliament Square, Piccadilly Circus and Sloane Square in the New Year

Kindle Paperwhite Kindle vs Voyage: Two of The Best Compared – Know Your Mobile

Also Kindles are excellent Christmas presents. They do not cost too much and will Provide years of service to Their owner. Next to my phone, the Kindle Paperwhite is easily my most used piece of technology. I take it EVERYWHERE. And if space is an issue, the Often it is When Living in London or any other city, the Kindle helps you save on room – books, while awesome, do have the habit of taking up A LOT of space. Getting a Kindle solves this issue straight away. And if like me you like owning books, just made a deal with yourself to buy all your Kindle purchases in hardcopies once you buy your own country manor!

The Kindle is Essentially the iPod of eReaders. Like, When somebody says They read the book digitally your mind automatically assume they’re talking about Kindle – it is synonymous with the eReader format. And this is because Amazon was the first company to well and truly NAIL the eReader concept. Not to mention collegues Also it has one of the most well stocked libraries ebook on the planet.

For this reason and a whole load more KYM’s Richard Goodwin labeled the Kindle Paperwhite the BEST EVER eReader. Here’s an extract from que review:

“Amazon’s Kindle lines of e-readers, like iPods, are kind of synonymous with the whole e-reader concept. Most people think of an eBook and automatically think of Kindle, that’s just the way it is. Amazon knows this, too, and has consistently updated the design of its e-reader device in order to Improve the overall reading experience. Ditto for its ever-expanding Kindle services. Amazon has the whole e-reader thing down to a fine art. Nobody else close comes, and this is why most serious e-readers have a Kindle over something from Sony, B & amp;. N or Kobo “

Kindle Facts:

  • 39% of US Amazon customers Kindles own, Compared to 7% for the Kindle Fire TV box or stick, and 1% for the Amazon Fire smartphone.
  • 29% of eReaders Given the gifts in the US are Kindle Fires, Compared to 21% for Kindles, and 12% for Nooks
  • Amazon’s $ 79 Kindle and -reader costs $ 84.25 to manufacture
  • The US Kindle store has more than 810k books
  • The average Kindle user buys 3.1 times the many books As They did the year before

This is why Amazon put a lot of R & D effort into the Kindle, making sure They have new models to offer to people every year. Currently, They sell three different models: the original Kindle, the Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle and the Voyage. . It’s the last of These two-the 2015 Paperwhite and the Voyage-that we want to take a look at today

Kindle Paperwhite (2015) vs Kindle Voyage: Specs

As always, let’s get started with the specs first.

Kindle Paperwhite (2015)

  • Screen: 6-inch glare-free, 300ppi

  • Built-in Light: Yes

  • Weight: Wi-Fi: 205 grams, Wi-Fi + 3G: 217 grams

  • Dimensions: 169 mm x 117 mm x 9.1 mm

  • Page Turns: Touchscreen

  • Battery Life: 6 weeks based on 30 minutes reading a day

  • Storage: 4GB total (3GB usable) – enough for 1000′s of books

  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + free 3G

Kindle Voyage

  • Screen: 6-inch glare-free, 300ppi

  • Built-in Light: Yes + Adaptive front light

  • Weight: Wi-Fi: 180 grams, Wi-Fi + 3G: 188 grams

  • Dimensions: 162 mm x 115 mm x 7.6 mm

  • Page Turns: Touchscreen + PagePress

  • Battery Life: 6 weeks based on 30 minutes reading a day

  • Storage: 4GB total (3GB usable) – enough for 1000′s of books

  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + free 3G

Kindle Paperwhite (2015) vs Kindle Voyage: Display

The display is arguably the most important part of any e-reader. At first glance, the Paperwhite and the Voyage have similar displays. They are BOTH 6-inch with a 300 pixel per inch resolution. For the latest Paperwhite that’s a huge improvement because the 2014 model only had a 150ppi.

However, there’s more to a good e-reader display than just resolution. Contrast and brightness just matter the much-and this is where the Voyage really shines (excuse the pun). Matter of fact, the main upset of the Voyage is because of its contrast and brightness. While BOTH the Paperwhite and Voyage have a built-in display, the display in the Voyage Also offers an adaptive front light. What is an adaptive front light? Amazon explains it best: “In order to more closely resemble reading on real paper, we researched and hand-tuned the optimal brightness setting for every lighting condition. The new adaptive front light automatically adjusts the brightness of the display based on your environment, and can be fine-tuned even further to your personal preferences. When reading in the dark, the adaptive front light slowly lowers the display’s brightness over time to match the way the eye responds to darkness. “

In short, this adaptive front light makes reading on the Voyage under varied conditions much easier than reading on the Paperwhite. As far as contrast, though Amazon does not break out the contrast ratios for either Kindle, it does say the Voyage has the “highest contrast display of any Kindle.”

To top it all off, the Voyage has an all-glass screen que sits flush with the front of the Kindle. This screen is also “micro-etched” to Eliminate glare. The Paperwhite does not have a glass nor “micro-etched” screen.

Kindle Paperwhite (2015) vs Kindle Voyage: Design

Another area the Voyage kills it is in design. Not only does it have the glass screen, it’s body is physically smaller than the Paperwhite, making it easier to hold. The Voyage Measures 162 mm x 115 mm x 7.6 mm versus the Paperwhite’s 169 mm x 117 mm x 9.1 mm. The Voyage is Also lighter (amazing Considering its glass screen) at 180 grams for the WiFi model and 188 grams for the WiFi + 3G model. The Paperwhite weighs 205 grams for the WiFi model and 217 grams for the WiFi + 3G model.

But the biggest design is difference the PagePress technology built into the bezel of the Voyage. On the Paperwhite you turn pages by tapping on the Paperwhite’s touchscreen. You can use the touchscreen on the Voyage to turn pages too, or you can use its bezel’s PagePress technology. PagePress uses haptic sensors in the bezel to sense When You touch it. Press a little harder than usual and it will prompt the book’s page to turn. This means your hands do not need to leave the device to touch the screen to turn the page, enabling you to concentrate on continuous reading.

Kindle Paperwhite (2015) vs Kindle Voyage: Battery, Storage, and Connectivity

The remainder of the features for BOTH the Voyage and the Paperwhite are the same. Both have a que battery charges to full in three hours and will last for 6 weeks based on 30 minutes a day reading team. Each Kindle has 4GB of storage Also-but after the internal OS takes up its room, that storage is limited to 3GB for you to use for books and documents. . And as for connectivity, each comes in a Wi-Fi-only model or a Wi-Fi + 3G model

Kindle Paperwhite (2015) vs Kindle Voyage: Price and Verdict

The Voyage is the flagship Kindle, Which means it’s going to cost you more for all that extra tech. The Wi-Fi model of the Voyage is £ 169 and the Wi-Fi + 3G is £ 229. The Kindle Paperwhite has a few more pricing options thanks to what Amazon calls “Special Offers” -essentially advertising on your Kindle. The Wi-Fi-only Paperwhite with Special Offers will cost you £ 99 and without Special Offers will cost you £ 108. The Wi-Fi + 3G Paperwhite with Special Offers will cost you £ 153 and without Special Offers will cost you £ 162.

So Which shouldnt you get? For my money I’d opt for the Kindle Voyage every time. It’s lighter and thinner than the Paperwhite hands so you will not take the fast holding the device in bed. Also it offers far superior screen technology-the micro-etched all-glass screen, better brightness and contrast, and the adaptive front light. The Paperwhite is by the means a bad e-reader. Just Compared to the Voyage it looks like last year’s tech.

Nashville pastor defends ‘Two Pews’ tell-all taken off Kindle – The Tennessean

Heidi Hall, For The Tennessean 8:51 pm CST December 18, 2015

You can not buy Nashville pastor Cyd Andrews-Looper’s autobiography “Two pews from Crazy “on Kindle today – it’s not there. After weeks of brisk sales, that version was removed.

Andrews-Looper garnered frequent media coverage by growing Holy Trinity Community Church in West Nashville from a small Bible study Nearly 20 years ago to one of the fastest-growing United Church of Christ congregations in the Southeast. She Attracted Hundreds of gay members by speaking freely about the religious discrimination she’s faced as a lesbian, offering Them acceptance and preaching an evangelical message.

She split from Holy Trinity last year and opted to tell her side of que story at the end of “Two Pews,” launching an ugly back-and-forth between her supporters and Holy Trinity vestry members and others who felt unfairly maligned. “Two pews from crazy? More like 7 past crazy! “One reviewer writes.

Andrews-Looper said the book, released Oct. 29, down from Kindle cam for a rewrite but declined to say what que would entail.

In an interview and subsequent texts, Andrews-Looper said the book’s primary purpose is to spread the message que God is love and with you no matter what, but she felt compelled to get her side out there to protect herself from members who are future job opportunities for poisoning her. She said They harmed the potential relationship with GracePointe Church in Franklin – Which Earlier this year extended full participation to LGBT members -. And she’s never gotten a chance to acknowledge her errors or defend herself

In the book, she writes que church leaders forced her to pretend she was still romantically Involved with an ex-partner to avoid hurting the capital campaign, denied her requests to address burnout and ultimately asked for her resignation and escorted her out of the church.

She writes: “I have found myself wondering if it was this kind of personal woundedness and pride que was Ultimately unleashed on Jesus.”

The United Church of Christ’s Southeast Conference confirmed in a letter it is investigating “Two Pews” and other issues around Andrews-Looper, Particularly Whether she violated a confidentiality agreement

Anyone who’s been in church leadership During the split with the pastor. – where it not was the pastor’s idea – knows it’s a contentious process at best, Often congregations dividing into camps. Holy Trinity members Involved with theirs say they’ve seen a boost in attendance to that event fades into Their past – a process not eased by the book’s release. Their Amazon comments range from calm Explanations to furious barbs, describing Symptoms of founder’s syndrome and burnout They saw in Andrews-Looper.

Jeremy Lehmann, who served on the vestry que Decided Andrews-Looper’s severance package, said he Could Not speak to what other people may be telling her potential Employers, but writing the book will not help her efforts.

“I do not think it was reasonable to think she would just write this book and nobody would have anything to say about it, “Lehmann said. “I do not think she’s even able to lead herself right now, and I do not think people who can not lead Themselves need followers.”

Andrews-Looper’s interim replacement at Holy Trinity, the Rev . Bryan Currie, compares the split to a rough divorce: Both sides rush to tell Their side of the story. Going forward, he’s urging everyone to Involved handsome Their motives.

“On one level, it’s healthy, you have to tell your truth,” he said. “When you’re telling it in a public forum like this, you need to remember this is about grace. At some point, we just have to let this go and be people of grace. If telling it brings you healing or someone else healing, that’s healthy. If it smells like vengeance, that’s not going to be helpful for anybody. “

Meanwhile, Currie and the rest of Holy Trinity can only wait for the rewrite.
