With the launch of the first Kindle Paperwhite, in 2012, Amazon finally answered a longstanding demand by users: a lighting system that allows for reading in the dark. This novelty, also present in some competitors at the time, was enough to put the Paperwhite on top of your category.
The 2013 edition of the product, launched late last year, no big news arrives. She brings a faster processor and a lighting system improved, but otherwise just keeps the winner of the first ever Paperwhite design.
In Brazil, the closest competitors are the Paperwhite and Kobo Kobo Glo Aura HD, both with backlit display. A new model of Kobo, the Kobo Aura, has a similar size and Paperwhite should be released soon in the country

Design
is virtually impossible to distinguish the new Paperwhite of the 2012 model. The dimensions are the same and the area occupied by the screen too. The only visible difference is back where the logo was replaced by Kindle Amazon logo.
Paperwhite has a slightly rubberized back, making it easy to grip. The 6-inch screen comes standard among e-readers becoming and is easy to explain the reasons. This size combines good portability (fits up to the Kindle in pockets of jeans) and a nice reading area.
Like its predecessor, the new Paperwhite has only one physical button, the on / off. He is on the bottom, next to the microUSB connector.
Settings
The most significant change is the new processor configuration. According to Amazon, it is 25% faster than the previous generation chip Paperwhite. In practice, the new chip lets trade a little faster pages.
The total memory of the device remains 2 GB, with 1.3 GB free for books. According to Amazon, this amount is enough to store over a thousand books on the device. Here, it is worth noting that all the books purchased by the user are also stored on Amazon’s servers (which have unlimited space) and can be downloaded anytime.
downloading books is done through Wi-Fi (there is a version with 3G Paperwhite 2012 for sale in Brazil, but the Paperwhite 2013 with 3G is not sold here). As the book files are small, the transfer is usually done in a few seconds.
Screen
screen new Paperwhite maintains excellent resolution of the previous model and brings slight improvements in lighting. With pixel density of 212 dpi, the screen allows you to clearly read the texts even with inclined unit. And the lighting ensures a comfortable reading also in the dark.
The lighting system of the new Paperwhite distributes light more seamlessly across the screen, thus avoiding too bright or dark areas.
In practice, it is a bit softer than the previous model. The lighting system has 24 levels of intensity.
Changing pages is simple. Just touch the right area of ??the screen to advance and play on the left side to go back.
gestures to swipe left or right (common on tablets) also work.
System and Store
The main screen of the handset brings the currently downloaded books and shortcuts to useful resources such as lighting control, search and shop. Was missing just a quick access button to turn off or turn on Wi-Fi (to do this you must go to the settings page of the device).
You can buy books directly from the Kindle, accessing the Amazon store. The company has assets of more than 2 million books in your store, but most are in English. In Portuguese, the amount is about 27 000 procedures, including many public domain books and independent works.
acquis in Portuguese is improving, but it is undeniable that in many areas the more specific catalog lacking. That with the popularity of digital books and action of stronger Amazon in Brail, the number of books increases are expected. For comparison, the Kobo store has about 19,000 books in Portuguese.
Many analysts estimate that Amazon earns nothing from the sale of Kindle devices. The company’s profit would come from selling books.
So it is no surprise that the experience of reading books bought on Amazon is excellent, while reading books in other formats of files is sometimes problematic.
The PDF standard is supported, but the files are not often displayed in the best way. To fix this problem you need to use conversion software such as Calibre.
yet in the question formats, the Kindle is the only e-reader among the most popular to ignore the format. You can use Calibre to convert the files to a compatible format, but it is a chore for most users.
new Paperwhite also brings some new features that speed reading. Among them are vocabulary builder (gathers on one screen dictionary definitions of the searched words) and new box of dictionary definitions (the information is now displayed in an overlay box to the page, and not on a separate page).
The device also has useful resources already present in previous models, such as information about the remaining chapter time. Other useful tools are the widgets and auxiliary programs that allow you to send web pages and documents stored on the PC directly to the Kindle.
Battery
Amazon says that the Kindle battery Paperwhite can reach up to eight weeks, and this is a really plausible value. IG tested the unit for a month with frequent use and no need to charge the battery. Battery life can be extended by turning off Wi-Fi or using the lighting system less frequently.
Conclusion
Kindle Paperwhite is currently the best electronic book reader market. The screen is great, the machine is fast, lightweight and convenient to use. The acquis in Portuguese is still not ideal, but it tends to grow as the Amazon strengthens its presence in Brazil.
For those who already have the previous generation Paperwhite, exchange the newest model is not worth it. For those who still want to buy an e-reader, the new Paperwhite is certainly an excellent option. He is R $ 180 more expensive than its “brother” Kindle, which has illuminated screen. For those who can spend a little more, the price difference pays off. Another good alternative is the Kobo Aura, quedeve get to Brazil soon.
