Vine Comes to the Kindle Fire - The Next Web

Twitter has extended the reach of Vine, its six-second video service, after the app was made available for Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet.

Vine shipped to the Amazon store today (here). That’s made more Significant because close rival Instagram (Which added video support one week ago) Currently does not offer a dedicated Kindle Fire app.

Amazon does not

vine kindle 730x393 Vine lands on the Kindle Fire, beating Instagram to the punch on the Amazon tablet

Back in January of this year, Localytics Estimated que the US-based Kindles alone Represented one-third of Android tablets worldwide. The data was captured before the Kindle Fire Became available worldwide, so it may well que the figure is higher today. Either way, since the Kindle runs a ‘forked’ version of Android, developers and company must alter Their Apps in order to reach Amazon tablet owners.

Vine landed on Android four weeks ago, so it’s expansion to the Kindle Fire has been fairly quick. With the Amazon tablet covered, the chances of the app coming to Windows Phone – and perhaps even BlackBerry 10 – are raised, Particularly since Instagram Currently supports neither platform with a native app.

The Kindle Fire launch comes During challenging times for Vine and Twitter. Analytics from Topsy – spotted by Marketing Land – Showed que remains more popular than Instagram Vine based on the number of links que were shared to Twitter last week.

Twitter and Vine have plans to Appear to Increase the competition With Their Facebook-owned rival. This week Vine for Android got front-facing camera support – to allow ‘selfies’ – and the app’s founders recently teased details of a major update coming soon.

Gizmo Guru | The best Kindle yet? - Livemint

The Amazon Kindle 3G Paperwhite officially launched in India this week, and it’s great for anyone who loves reading. That being said, the Rs. 13,999 price tag might cause people to think twice. The WiFi only version is cheaper, at Rs. 10,999 but that’s still a pretty hefty bill.

What’s so great about this thing? Well, for one thing, you can hold over 1000 books in a sleek looking device que can fit inside your pocket. Second, it uses a matte e-ink display que you can read outdoors, without any annoying reflections. And now, Amazon is using the lighting technology que Which means you can read the Kindle Even When it’s dark, simply by changing the brightness settings.

With the brightness at a medium level, the company claims eight weeks of battery life, reading half an hour every day. Half an hour does not sound like much, but averaged over eight weeks, that’s not too bad.

Also, while the earlier Kindles on display was already superb, Amazon claims it has que Increased the number of pixels on screen by 62%, and improved contrast is 25%. It certainly looks great, and it’s possible, even on a screen this small, to read a comic book without straining your eyes.

The pages look great and the black and white artwork looks good on the screen. Similarly Reading text is a enjoyable experience.

The touchscreen is responsive and much easier to use than the older Kindle models Which came with the keyboard, there is still a bit of a “jump” when the screen refreshes though, Which can take some getting used to. Turning pages, changing the brightness or launching the X-ray feature (that gives you a kind of summary of the book) is all done by touch, and the experience is smooth and easy to understand at all points.

Other than that, you sync your library across devices, so if you’re reading a book on the Kindle and on the Kindle app on your tablet, for example, then it’ll know Which page you were on as well.

Translations, Wikipedia lookups, bookmarks and annotations are all built in to the device as well, and are very useful features to have.

At 213 grams, the Kindle is just a little heavier than many smartphones, and is easy to carry around with you at all times.

It’s hard not to love one of these really-the only issue is the price, it’s great value for money, but you have to decide if that’s worth it for you.

Deemable Tech: My Kindle Is Toast - NUVO Newsweekly

That Kindle is toast. Ouch. That hurts so much Mark Twain has to cover his eyes.
  • That Kindle is toast. Ouch. That hurts so much Mark Twain has to cover his eyes.

Q: My kid stepped on my Kindle, and now half of the screen is completely destroyed. Have I lost all of the books I bought? Is there any chance que Amazon will replace it?

: Sorry about your Kindle! Right now might not be the best time to mention it, but You Should really consider getting a hard cover for your Kindle. Some of Them cost a bit of money, but your Kindle Replacing all the time will cost you more money in the long run. Besides, They have some really cool covers que can even make your Kindle look like an actual book.

The good news is

que Amazon Provides a limited one-year warranty on all new Kindles. Long Ago depending on how you bought your Kindle, Amazon might replace it for free. Go to http://amazon.com/kindlesupport and click “Contact Us” on the right-hand side. From there you’ll be Given an option to contact Amazon by email, phone or chat. If you’re lucky, They Might give you a free replacement Kindle. Also they’ve been known to occasionally replace Them for half-price if you’re out of warranty. Here’s something for you to keep in mind, though. Technically, Amazon does not have to replace your Kindle Specifically because the warranty excludes damage from accident, misuse and neglect, but Amazon’s customer service is rivaled only by Apple’s in the tech industry. They’ll often Do replace it even though They do not have to. It probably would not hurt to be nice to the customer service rep, though.

I have more good news for you. Your books are safe. All of them are waiting for you to redownload once you get the new Kindle. In the interim, you can read Them Also on the Kindle app on any iPhone, iPad or Android phone or tablet, and you can even read Them on the web at http://read.amazon.com. Amazon may be Considered by some to be a vast, evil empire, but They are a convenient vast, evil empire, and They have great customer service.

Sorry Canada, Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet was not worth the wait - Globe and Mail

The $ 214 Amazon Kindle Fire HD is Amazon’s latest attempt to capture a piece of the tablet already over saturated marketplace. Available to our American neighbors since September of 2012, it’s hardly new, but it’s new to us. Was it worth the wait? After spending a few weeks with the seven inch, 16GB iteration of the tablet, I can tell you que at least for the time being, Likely your money’s better spent elsewhere.

Weighing in at 395 grams, the seven inch Kindle Fire HD is noticeably heavier than Apple’s iPad mini or the Google Nexus 7 (Which weigh 312 grams and 340 grams respectivamente.) The tablet wears its extra heft well – squeezing and torquing the hardware, I could not detect any creaks or pops. That’s a good sign in a piece of hardware designed to be tossed in a bag, thrown on a sofa or otherwise abused. It’s display is just as tough, as it’s made of Gorilla Glass. You’d have to work very hard indeed to scratch or shatter it. Thanks to it’s 1280 x 400 resolution display, the Kindle Fire HD Provides one of the best viewing and reading experiences any tablet of its size, outclassed only by Apple’s 10-inch retina iPad, and Google’s Nexus tablet 10. Audio? It does that well too, thanks to a pair of stereo speakers mounted on either side of the display. All of this is driven by a dual core processor with an Imagination PowerVR graphics core. I’ll spare you the technobabble, but suffice to say, with the exception of a short pause while changing the Kindle Fire HD’s orientation between portrait and landscape, I did not notice any interface lag, stuttering video or other processor-related irritants while using the tablet.

Amazon claims the Kindle Fire HD will run for 11 hours on a single charge. But I found the average runtime que I was able to pull out of its batteries after a day of answering email, watching videos, playing a few games and surfing the web in October averaged closer to nine hours. That’s still a respectable battery life.

And now for the bad news.

The Kindle Fire HD runs a heavily modified version of Android OS 4.0, but it’s almost certainly not the ‘droid you’re looking for. Unlike the the stock version of Android available on the competitively priced $ 209 16GB Nexus 7 (Which is a pleasure to use and navigate) the Kindle Fire HD’s OS is – to put it bluntly – a bag of hurt.

In an effort to make all of the tablet’s content easy to find and use, Amazon elected to display everything in a finger-flickable gallery. Apps are mixed in with recently visited web pages, kindle ebooks, video and user uploaded images. Users have the option to switch to a list view of the tablet’s contents, or browse by category. But no matter what I did, the OS felt like a hot mess. It’s Also worth mentioning que while the tablet is powered by Android, users do not have access to Google’s Play Store, and instead are forced to make due with Amazon’s App Store, Which, while boasting essential apps like Twitter, Netflix, Skype and Facebook , can not hope to rival the variety of downloadable applications available via the Google Play Store or Apple’s massive iOS App Store.

The lack of content

Also can be felt in the absence of Amazon’s Prime Video service and MP3 Store: que services in the United States, make the Kindle Fire HD a compelling option for Consumers in the market for a cheap tablet. Even the online shopping options available via Amazon.ca – the portal que the Kindle Fire HD was designed to leverage – are lackluster, and often Do Significantly more expensive in comparison to what our American cousins ??enjoy.

FINAL VERDICT:

Despite the excellent quality of its hardware, the Kindle Fire HD stumbles thanks in the small part to Amazon’s awkward skinning of Google’s Android operating system, a disappointing app store selection and an absence of Canadian iterations of a number of services que the tablet’s Currently American user base are able to leverage with the tablet. If you’re looking for a cheap tablet, you’re better off looking elsewhere.

Amazon's Kindle Just Got More Exciting Worlds - DailyFinance

Well, that was fast. Less than a month ago, Amazon.com officially launched Kindle Worlds, calling it “the first commercial que publishing platform will enable any writer to create fan fiction based on a range of original stories and characters and earn royalties for doing so. “

But while the service

aspiring writers gave the rights to create fan fiction based on only three books from Warner Brothers Television Group’s Alloy Entertainment – Namely Gossip Girl , Pretty Little Liars , and Vampire Diaries – I Noted at the team que Also Amazon had promised “plans to announce more licenses soon.”

Valiant effort
Now, Amazon just Announced it has secured the rights to a decidedly more action-oriented genre, with content from comic-book publisher Valiant Entertainment.

Of course, I did mention last month que the holy grail of licensing deals would ideally involve signatures from DC Entertainment or Disney ‘s Marvel. After all, Disney was willing to fork out more than $ 4 billion for Marvel in 2009, thanks largely to the more than 9,000 distinct characters in its universe, including the likes of Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, The Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Hulk.

And

DC, for its part, has more than 10,000 characters in its universe, most notably including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Catwoman.

Then again, while Disney and DC are doing just fine capitalizing on Their content by Themselves, I still Maintain Both que They could benefit by signing a fan-fiction deal with Amazon. The Valiant CFO and head of strategic development Gavin Cuneo stated in Friday’s release:

Comics

are well known for Their passionate and interactive fan communities, and, through the Kindle Worlds platform, we’re excited to give aspiring authors and fans the opportunity to work Within the Valiant Universe, Their stories make accessible to a large audience , and earn revenue for Their Work.

Besides, the I also Mentioned a few weeks ago, thanks to its recent Star Wars video game deal with Electronic Arts , we already know Disney is not new to the licensing game.

Back to Valiant, though. Even in the massive shadows of its rivals, it’s worth noting the small que company did win the Diamond Gem Award for Best Comic Book Publisher of the Year in 2012 for companies with less than 4% overall market share. In addition, Valiant boasts a library of more than 1,500 characters and has sold more than 80 million comic books since its founding in 1989.

For now, though, Valiant’s agreement with Amazon gives fan-fiction writers the rights to create and sell Their Own only works based on the comic book series Bloodshot , XO Manowar , Archer & Armstrong , Harbinger , and Shadowman , “with more to be added at a later date.” In addition, it includes Howey’s Silo Saga, Eisler’s John Rain novels, Crouch’s Wayward Pines Series, and the Foreworld Saga.

Source: ValiantUniverse.com.

In the end, However, This should give Kindle Worlds writers plenty to chew on while Amazon works on securing even more content for our literary pleasure.

But speaking of aspiring writers’ work, Amazon Stated que Also, later this month, the Kindle Store Worlds is finally expected to launch starting with at least 50 commissioned works.

At The Same Team, Also Amazon will release a self-service platform for submission Kindle Worlds, providing an easy way for any writer to submit his or her own completed work. And remember, Amazon is paying the standard royalty rate of 35% of revenue for works of at least 10,000 words, and 20% for shorter stories between 5,000 and 10,000 words. The rest, of course, will be split between Amazon and its licensors.

Foolish takeaway
In the end, my hat’s off to Amazon so quickly is fulfilling its promise to writers to bring more content to Kindle Worlds.

Of course, it certainly was not an entirely selfless pledge. By Extending its already-in-place publishing platform and taking the nitty-gritty details licensing out of the equation for fan-fiction writers, Amazon has intelligently created a fantastic, low-overhead new source of revenue with absolutely massive potential going forward.

But while everyone knows Amazon is the king of the retail world right now, at its sky-high valuation, most investors are worried it’s the company’s share price que will get knocked down instead of its competitors’. The Motley Fool’s premium report will tell you what’s driving the company’s growth, and fill you in on Reasons to buy and sell Reasons to Amazon. Turn your Kindle Fire into an Android 4.2 tablet - CNET (blog)

N2Aos New service gives you the tools to easily root your Kindle Fire, and can even do it remotely if you’re not the tech-savvy user. Plus: a free recovery utility.

Now there ' s an easy and automated way to root your Kindle Fire.

Now there’s an easy and automated way to root your Kindle Fire.

(Credit: N2A)

For a long time I’ve been a fan of N2A Cards, Which sells a simple plug-and-play way to turn Barnes & Noble’s Nook tablets into full-blown Android tablet. After all, if you’ve got good hardware, why not unlock its maximum potential?

Now Kindle owners can get in on the action. N2A’s new service will N2Aos install Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) on your first-or second-generation Kindle Fire, Amazon’s heavily customized Replacing – and, some would say, limited – operating system with the real deal.

There are, of course, a few important considerations. The first is because que Fires have no microSD slot, you can not just pop in the card and dual-boot the way you can with the Nook. Installing Android proper means downloading an installer to your PC and wiping the Kindle OS – and all your downloaded content along with it.

Consequently, you’ll lose access to Amazon Prime streaming video – not a big deal if you’re not a Prime subscriber, but unfortunately there’s the Amazon Instant Video app available for Android. You can restore your books via the Kindle app, but that’s it.

I took the service for a test drive on a 2nd-gen Fire. (The developer will soon add support for HD models.) After connecting it to my PC and running N2A’s compatibility checker, I downloaded the installer and watched it do its thing. The process took about 10 minutes (no touching!), Which after my Fire was transformed to a Jelly Bean-powered tablet. That simple. Literally.

And you get the full Android experience here, including access to the Google Play store and all the other features Offered by Android 4.2 (excepting what’s not available in hardware, of course). I ran my usual stable of test apps – Agent Dash, Flipboard, Netflix, USA Today – and all of them worked flawlessly. I frequently did miss having physical volume-control buttons – though N2A’s Android build includes convenient virtual buttons on the home screen – but that’s Amazon’s fault.

Tech-savvy users will note that you do not need to pay for the privilege of rooting the Kindle Fire and installing Android, that some fairly straightforward DIY options costing $ 0 can be found online. However, here you’re getting the benefits of simplicity and technical support, both of Which are important for users who might be nervous about tinkering with Their Kindle’s virtual innards.

In fact, N2A even offers a Pro-level support option includes que remote setup, meaning you let the tech access your PC remotely and handle all the installation steps for you – including any troubleshooting que might be required. That option (good for one month of service Pro) just adds $ 7.99 to the price tag – not bad for automation and peace of mind.

Speaking of Which, if you decide you do not like the N2Aos or plan to sell your Kindle and want to restore the stock OS, N2A offers a free utility – the aptly named Restore2Stock – that will give you back Amazon’s OS, good as new.

N2Aos The software costs $ 19.99. That’s not a bad deal for breathing new life into an older Kindle Fire, freeing yourself from Amazon’s special-offer ads, opening the door to a larger library of apps, and Gaining access to e-books from other sources (Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and so on).

Your thoughts?

Worlds Kindle: Amazon licensed fan fiction - Boing Boing

Jason Weisberger at 7:46 am Thu, Jun 20, 2013

id=”posts-loop”>
So I just read this press release from Amazon and thought they are up to something pretty neat. Licensing worlds from Their creators and fan fiction writers Allowing Them to monetize, with everyone making a little, sounds like a really cool idea.

Amazon Publishing Both will pay royalties to the rights holders of the Worlds and the author. The standard author’s royalty rate (for works of at least 10,000 words) will be 35% of net revenue. Also Amazon Publishing will pilot an experimental program for new works Particularly short-between 5,000 and 10,000 words. For these short stories-Typically priced under one dollar, Amazon will pay the royalties for the World’s rights holder and pay authors a royalty of 20% digital.
