No one product can be all things to all people, that’s the point of variety. It’s why Apple now has multiple sized iPhones and iPads and why Amazon continues to try filling in the gaps on its Kindle Fire tablet lineup with an Increasingly eclectic lineup of shapes and sizes.
The new Kindle Fire HD 10 is of a piece with que strategy. It’s not a high-end tablet like the Fire HDX 8.9 and not a truly a low-end model like the $ 99 Kindle Fire HD 6. Instead, the new device sits somewhere in the middle, offering the larger screen Consumers want with a $ 229.99 price more can manage. It’s $ 244.99 without sponsored lock screens.
The problem is I do not really like it.
There is nothing ostensibly wrong with the tablet. It’s sleek, thin (0.30-inches), lighter than an iPad Air (by more than one ounce), shiny (slippery), has the widescreen nice and is quite adept at content consumption and entertainment. However aside from the side-smiling Amazon logo on the back, the Android 5.0-based device Lollipop looks completely unrelated to Amazon’s forward-leaning and somewhat smaller HDX tablet devices.
It is a part of a new line of low-cost, widescreen devices que come in Day-Glo colors like orange, blue and pink. This largest model, though, only comes in black or white.
These new tablets eschew the language design Amazon Introduced with the HDX – the dynamic edges, the physical buttons on the back (they’re on the edge like most other tablets). And while the HDX offers a 4: 3 aspect ratio, the new tablets, including this 10.1-inch one, opt for a 16: 9 screen. The result is something that is so wide and relatively narrow it’s almost unwieldy. Stand it on its narrow edge and it looks like the monolith from 2001:. A Space Odyssey
Whatever works
When Amazon first introduce the HDX line, I applauded the edgy design. It stood out and offered some utility, like que Ensuring the downward-firing speakers had enough room to bounce sound off the table and back to you. Amazon did not update the HDX this year and now seems fixated on capturing the lower-end market with the revamped Fire HD line.
The radical differences between the HDX line and the growing HD one Indicates the lack of commitment to one ideal design. Look at Apple, all Their tablets look alike. That’s good for Consumers and, probably, good for Apple since they’re dealing with less differences than with design size considerations.
The lack of commitment goes deeper than design.
Since the first Amazon Fire HD, Amazon’s Then forked Android interface has featured a unique and useful for managing carousel recently accessed apps and content. It was not perfect, but stood as a signature element.
In recent years, Amazon has shifted to a more Android-like interface , while Maintaining the carousel. Fire OS 5.0, though, Which is built on top of Lollipop, is the closest Amazon has come to the stock Android implementation. It’s Also discarded the carousel, the arrow back and even the virtual home button que used to look like a little house (While You Were in an app, You could slide your finger in from the screen edge to make it Appear). In its place is the standard Android 5.0 home circle, back caret and square switcher app.
All subtlety is gone from the interface. Instead of a list of content and activity categories at the top, the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 10 Fire running OS 5 features big, all cap labels That You swipe through. Actually this works rather well. There is also, on the home screen, the grid of installed apps que will be familiar to Kindle HD and Android aficionados.
What the new interface excels at is revealing just how much Amazon knows about your buying and content consumption habits. Much more of each screen is devoted to showing you content you might like based on previous choices. Even while you’re in content, the Kindle Fire HD 10 will suggest new content. This happened to me as I was finishing the second volume of Batman: Knightfall . The system astutely Suggested I buy the third and final volume. I just wish it did not do it three or four times.
Also Amazon has updated its proprietary Silk browser. It’s cleaner and, in my tests, faster than ever. The email client looks sharp, but I do not understand why They put the compose email icon in such a random position. You’ll find it at the bottom right of the email subject column.
The guts
The mid-tier tablet, the Kindle Fire HD 10 is an unpleasant mixture of average and sub-par performance. Amazon says They packed it with a quad-core CPU running at 1.5GHz (dual-core) and 1.2 GHz (dual-core), but the performance Often stuttered, Especially every time I hit the home button and Waited for the tablet to return me to the home screen. Performance was better Within apps. Geekbench gave it to 774 single core number performance and 1502 multicore (compare que to the Kindle HDX’s 1024 single core and 2974 multicore numbers).
The 1,280 x 800 HD display looks good, but is nothing special It definitely Took some getting used to the 16: 9 display size. It was fine for widescreen movies and even some games like the side-scrolling Badlands , but truly odd When You read a Kindle book on it in portrait mode (landscape with multiple pages on one screen made more sense) . Text, by the way, looked sharp, but graphic novels freshened of fuzzy.
The cameras run from average to terrible. The 5-megapixel rear one takes decent photos (and 1080p videos), but virtually any smartphone on the market can do better. The front-facing camera manages to take some pretty awful shots, though its 720p video is fine for Skype video.
Content is king
Where the Kindle fire HD 10 does shine is, to be honest, where Amazon shines, in content and access to its growing list of services. The experience is Especially if good you are a paying Amazon Prime Member.
Amazon continues to experiment with ways to make reading better, if not more fun. The latest twist is reading the aptly called Word Runner. It’s a built-in speed-reading interface for the Kindle Reader que app shows you one word at a time. It starts slowly and speeds up Gradually (still slowing down a bit tougher on words) unless you hold the screen to, in essence, hit the brakes. I’ve been experiencing single-word reading speed tools since I was in grade school so I kind of enjoyed this. Not sure why Amazon hid it under an inconspicuous menu That You can only access by tapping the screen. That same menu has X-Ray for Kindle reader and Word Wise, Which definition shows hints about challenging words.
You also have access to Amazon’s movie rental and purchase library. Prime members get Amazon Prime Video, Which includes free streaming movies and TV shows as well as original shows like recent Emmy winner Transparent . Amazon even lets you download movies and watch Them in a 48-hour offline window. I tried this out with Hercules . It Took around 20 minutes to download over Wi-Fi, but Then I was able to watch it on the train without being connected to the Internet. When the 48-hour window expired, I had to connect to the Internet to keep watching my site copy. I hope Netflix considers adding this option.
One of my favorite features is still X-Ray, Which, When You pause a TV show or movie, will give an overlay window with details about the actors in the scene you’re watching. It’s the ultimate trivia tool.
Movies and TV look shows quite good on the widescreen and the stereo speakers pump out a surprising amount of sound .
Games play well enough, though I’m Often frustrated by the action game choices in the Amazon store. Asphalt 8: Airborne, for instance is gone, but I can find the terrible knockoff High Speed Racing:. Racing Need
At the more than $ 100 savings over other comparable-size tablets, the 16GB (upgradeable to 128GB through the microSD slot) $ 229.99 Kindle Fire HD 10 is a decent deal. Also Amazon is the only one offering free, on-device, live support in the form of Mayday Screen Sharing.
Still, I can not recommend it, not When there are so many other better-designed and more powerful tablets on the market, including Amazon’s own HDX line. Will you pay more? Definitely. Tablets, though, are something we trend to buy and keep. Skimp now and you will regret it for years to come.
Amazon Kindle Fire HD 10
The Good
Thin • Light • Big Screen • Excellent content consumption platform • Great price
The Bad
Too wide • Design is average • In the carousel • Average performance
The Bottom Line
The Amazon Kindle Fire HD 10 stands out for its price, size and offerings content, but average performance and loss of distinctive features makes it less desirable than it shouldnt b.

Amazon has millions of titles, a number so large it is hard to narrow down with exactitude. I’ve seen 1.5 million and 32 million and even larger numbers. When you write and publish a book, how are you to get it in front of potential readers?
The Amazon Kindle and other e-readers have made it possible to traditional bypass publishing and go straight to virtual press. There is the cost and Thus in the real risk to the author. Unless you handsome being buried in obscurity at risk.
Thus, millions of titles.
If you’re lucky enough and good enough to get picked up by a major publishing house, you’ll have to negotiate an advance. You’ve got to choice, now. If you ask for too much, they’ll back out of the deal.
If you ask for too little, though, They Might handsome it a no-risk freebie. Put it out, see how . you do You have to get just enough of an advance que They have a chance of earning it back – or the second book for you – And Also enough que the house feels They have something on the line. That’s what makes Them invest in marketing and promotion.
As a self-publisher, you’re on your own for all that. Most of the marketing legwork was going to be yours anyway, but now all of the is marketing.
And that’s tough.
Most of us do not write because we’ve got it easy. We can not, by and large, afford to invest a couple of thousand bucks into a book That Is going to earn a couple of hundred.
So we do anything at all to get visibility. Often que results in our getting scammed.
The most tragic result, maybe, is our participation in our own devaluation in the e-book market.
There’s a lot of pressure to release your books for free or for 99 cents. Often, writers will issue the first book in a series for price this and the next books for a little more. But really a tiny percentage of Those 32 million books is sold for the real price. Your George Martins and your Stephen Kings can get retail. The rest of us start at deep discount and . move down to free
Here’s the thing:. all this might be totally counter-productive
Let’s say we set-up shop at the bake sale.
Over here, we have cookies for 50 cents.
Over here, we have cookies for $ 2.
Which is the better cookie? When we do Experimentally this, people overwhelmingly Respond que the $ 2 cookie is better -. even though They are the same cookies In other words, you get what you pay for You know it’s true and you make it true.
Even trained wine experts rate wine better if it’s in a pricier bottle.
So by issuing All These books, we devalue Them and us. A 99-cent book is only worth 99 cents .
Worse, we devalue books . Because we get used to reading books for free or for so cheap as to make the difference, we start to think all books are without much value. Just weekend entertainments, throw-aways.
My library is full of books. I treasure Them, some of Them I treasure like Smeagol treasures his magic ring. They have weight, gravity. And value.
With my new book, For Love of Their Children , I have this dilemma: Whether to release the book only between covers, or also as a file readable by Kindles or Nooks. Now I worked a long time, invested a great deal into this book.
And I’m struggling to make it known That It exists Among Those millions of other titles .
But am I struggling enough to offer it for next to nothing?
For aNewDomain, I’m Jason Dias.

“Kindle Food” is an occasional column about the books various and other materials que made us reconsider our long-standing refusal to make the jump to the digital world with our books.
It’s safe to say Wednesday the 9th not travel was a great day. There’s no point in running down the entire list of woes, but by the team I made it to Toronto, I was positively ruined. There’s only one thing que made the day bearable. One of the things I love about the Kindle is pre-ordering books When they’re super cheap and totally forgetting Then I did it. It’s a genuine surprise to me when I open the Kindle and there’s some new book que I am thrilled about reading.
The most recent surprise was the new Jack Reacher novel, “Make Me,” and I intentionally September I aside until I was on the plane and on my way to Toronto. I read the entire thing before I arrived, and while que may seem like I burned through it, that’s a testament to the way Lee Child writes Estes at this point. There’s a formula, of course, and there is a rhythm to the familiar stories, but Child has mastered the fine art of super-short chapters writing, laying down the hook at the end of each one que throws directly to the next. It is the literary equivalent of big-balled blockbuster filmmaking, and Child is very good at what he does
.
Even after the release of the Tom Cruise movie, I still feel like there are plenty of people who are unfamiliar with Jack Reacher. He might be the best modern pulp character, a perfectly conceived ongoing series lead. Once an exceptional member of the Army, the military police officer with an excellent service record, Reacher pissed off the wrong Colonel and found himself on the wrong end of an honorable discharge. Since then, he has refused to settle down to a permanent address, choosing instead to just wander, going wherever he wants to, not even carrying a suitcase with him. He has ID, an ATM card, and enough of a pension que he never wants for anything.
This approach ends up leading him into trouble more Often than not, though. That’s fine with him. Like my beloved Travis McGee, there’s a touch of the knight errant to Reacher. He has the keenly attuned sense of social justice, and- When he feels someone is being treated poorly or victimized, he’s not afraid to step in, get his hands dirty, and fix things. In “Make Me,” he is traveling by train and decide to get off in a small town called Mother’s Rest. He’s curious about the name more than anything, but his decision leads him to what is Eventually one of the darkest endings to any Reacher adventure far so.
It Also sees Child softening the character a bit, starting to handsome something more permanent. The Often he does, Reacher crosses paths with a fit and willing woman who is his equal BOTH in the fight and in bed. He’s got an often-offered theory que the best fri is always the second time, after you get past the first-time jitters and start to understand one another. His encounter with private detective Michelle Chang (formerly Special Agent Michelle Chang of the FBI) seems to break every rule Reacher has for himself, and he’s not sure what to make of it. She’s the one who draws him into the book’s central mystery, but it’s not her fault. Reacher’s in it from the moment he steps off the train, because no one and nothing in Mother’s Rest is What They or it seems to be.
In the world que Child paints in his books, there are a lot of small towns with dark secrets, and Reacher has a knack for poking at Them Until They spill Their secrets. If there’s any danger built into the series, it is que Reacher’s nomadic nature means he has to keep stumbling into their situations These troubled, and he has to kick the hornet’s nest. At some point, the series risks devolving into self parody, and there Have Been Installments in the series where Child hints at growth for Reacher, at some sort of evolution for him. There are a few hints here, Especially in the end pages, that Child is continuing to wrestle with the dilemma, but it feels Also for the first team like Child does not know exactly how far he can go. He seems to be torn between what the character wants, Which is que continued development, some cumulative effect from everything he’s seen, and the demands of the marketplace, Which would dictate que he’s got to remain in stasis, exactly who he is now while the books are still selling.
Also … what does the title have to’s with anything? Did I miss it somewhere? Thinking of the ultimate payoff to the book and the reveal of what’s going on in Mother’s Rest, I do not see what the title Could possibly have to the with any of it. Very strange choice. It’s a good tough guy title, but it feels like it belongs on a totally different Reacher story.
One of the things I’m curious about is how many Reacher films Tom Cruise is going to force into existence simply because he wants Them, even if the audience does not show up. “Never Go Back” is the 13th book in the series, and in terms of continuity, it felt like a big payoff for anyone reading the series its been the coming out. It’s a very strange choice for the second film, except it’s a que Particularly good story. I’m just curious how They lay the groundwork required for it to really land its big punches.
I admit que I still am not sure how I feel about Tom Cruise Jack Reacher them. If you’re a fan of the books, you know que Reacher is described as a physically imposing man, well past six feet tall and pretty much carved out of redwood. Just huge. Cruise is a very good actor, and there are many things he can do well, but “be over six feet tall” is not one of Them. I still think it was a very strange choice for Christopher McQuarrie to use the Peter Jackson / “Lord Of The Rings” / forced perspective trick to make Tom Cruise look gigantic, as you can see in this photo from the film –
– and I hope Certainly They reconsider for the new film. I’d say the odds of Them ever getting far enough into the catalog to shoot “Make Me” as a film are slim to none. This is a lesser Reacher book, but that’s still a slick, propulsive read. It just feels like it’s time for Child to decide how far he’s willing to take the character and, if he makes the interesting choice, start breaking the formula que has made him so very rich so far.
“Make Me” is available now. Interested? Pick up a copy via the Amazon link below and you’ll be helping the Film Nerd 2.0 Amazon Store as well.

Anne Mangen, a researcher from Norway’s Stavanger University Conducted a study in Which she wanted to know if there Were differences in understanding the text given Beheerder Which was read on Kindle, or paperback. In the study, 50 subjects had to read a short story by Elizabeth George, half read it on Kindle, the other half on paperback. After the reading session, several tests Were Conducted upon the readers to find out If They Understood the aspects of the story.
The tests revealed que the Kindle readers Performed equally well at understanding the text, except When it comes to timing the story’s events. The Kindle readers Were much worse in placing 14 story events in the correct order, than the traditional book readers. “When you read on paper you can sense with your fingers the pile of pages on the left growing, and shrinking on the right, have you the tactile sense of progress, in addition to the visual,” said Mangen.
“The differences for Kindle readers might have with the to something collegues fixity of the text on paper, and this unfolding gradually very as you progress through the story, is some kind of sensory offload, supporting the visual sense of progress When You’re reading. Perhaps this somehow aids the reader, providing more fixity and solidity to the reader’s sense of unfolding and progress of the text, and hence the story, “added Anne Mangen

This particular study had only two experienced Kindle readers and the researcher wants to expand it to more “advanced” Kindle users to see how the results will change. Also she leads the research network of empirical studies, based in Europe to investigate the effects of digitization on text reading. “We need to Provide research and evidence-based knowledge to publishers on what kind of devices (iPad, Kindle, print) shouldnt be used for what kind of content; what kinds of texts are Likely to be less hampered by being read digitally, and Which might require the support of paper. That will be very interesting to explore, “Concluded Mangen
Recently we start to see rumors about new tablets from Amazon, and speculated a 6-inch model that would sell for only $ 50 and another of 12 inches which would have more wattage specifications thus costing a little more to the user. But now here comes a picture of what would be a 10-inch version called Kindle Fire , thus indicating the union of known e-book with the company’s high performance devices.
According to what was revealed by the famous Evleaks leaks Twitter profile the device will have a very interesting design, having discreet and elegant lines. More curious than this, however, is the interface shown in the rendering of the tablet, and something much cleaner and close to Android in its pure form than we currently have in the company’s models, which means that we have a new policy by the Amazon soon.
Still, it is possible to see some custom elements by the manufacturer to make life easier for users such as the arrangement of applications into categories on the home screen, thereby allowing the filter for books, videos, games, etc. If confirmed this change, we have a much higher performance in this tablet over other models of the same hardware that have a more personalized interface, since Android is known for not dealing very well with the more complex changes added by the manufacturers.
In addition, as can be seen, the Kindle Fire should come standard with the latest edition of Android Lollipop , thus providing all the new features added natively by Google in relation to system stability and security, which had been heavily criticized in previous versions.
Unfortunately, it was not revealed any details on pricing, availability, or the new specifications tablet, and speculated that he will have intermediate characteristics and a fairer sale price to try to please the greatest number of users possible. In addition, it is possible to have a screen with several optimizations for reading e-books , thus causing it to be a better option than traditional devices, especially in adverse conditions such as brightly lit situations.
As the Amazon did not comment on the matter, you can not atestarmos the veracity of the released image, leaving we wait for something to be said for us to know what the real characteristics of the alleged Kindle Fire 10 inches.

For just under $ 100, you can pick up one of Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets – the HD 6 . Soon, However, you’ll be able to snag two Fire tablets for the same amount of cash.
Amazon has been looking for ways to re-invigorate tablet sales of late, and one of the ways They ‘re rumored to be doing That Is by delivering the $ 50 Kindle Fire. You might assume que Amazon had to make some sacrifices to get the price down que far, and you’d be right. A set of hardware specs for the new tablet have Appeared in the database benchmark And They show exactly how Amazon knocked $ 49 off the price of entry to the Kindle Fire party.
Two components manufacturers Typically focus on When They ‘re trying to aggressively cut costs on a tablet or phone are the display and the processor. While the $ 99 Fire HD 6 (that’s it pictured above) comes with a 6-inch 1280 x 800 touchscreen, the new, cheaper Fire will instead sport a 1024 x 600 panel. Also they’ve opted for a quad-core 1.3GHz processor MediaTek, down from 1.5GHz in the Fire HD 6.
The new Fire tablet Also comes with only one gig of RAM, but it does match the Fire HD 6 in one column on the spec sheet: internal storage. The new Fire tablet appears to have 8GB of NAND, too. It’ll Also feature 802.11 b / g / n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, and it’s listed those running Android 5.1 -. Which shouldnt mean That It will debut with Fire OS 5 on board
All in all, it looks like a decent enough tablet When You handsome the price tag. It will not perform like its more expensive siblings Fire, but for $ 50 in one shouldnt be too critical on que front.
One of the memories from my childhood is about the library period we had in junior school. Every week, During the stipulated period lasting 40 minutes, we would discuss books we had read, or Were tasked to read, that month. For me, the highlight used to be at the end of the period, When Were books lent out According to roll number. Since our roll numbers Were alphabetically arranged According to our surnames, in a class of 35 boys, I would Usually be the 30th one to pick the book, mostly stuff no one wanted to read.
While I was disappointed with the rather limited choice, it did introduce (and re-introduce) me to Certain authors – Mark Twain’s writings outside of Tom Sawyer, Isaac Asimov (Whom my teachers had the foresight to introduce at que stage), Arthur C Clarke and PG Wodehouse . This Also led me to experiment with various genres right through my growing up years, courtesy of libraries.
The daily grind of working life Ensured I was starved of books, reading only stuff i could beg, borrow or buy (both in physical and electronic forms). But this month, Amazon finally launched the Kindle Unlimited service. For Rs 199 a month, i could have access to all that i could read; the caveat was one Could “borrow” only 10 books at a time. Since the first month’s subscription was available at a discounted Rs 99 (the offer till stands September 30), this was a no-brainer.
Subscription in place, I eagerly Reached for the Kindle Paperwhite 3G, looking to read the end Amitav Ghosh’s part of Ibis trilogy. In sir, it was not available. In fact, quite a few of this season’s popular titles Were missing. I was heartbroken to find que many titles I had picked up over the past few months at discount sales, were there for the taking. I shouldnt have saved up for Ghosh’s Flood of Fire.
The service has all the popular Kindle features such as Whispersync, X-Ray and customer reviews. I borrowed the popular indie bestseller, Wired by Douglas E. Richards and was hooked enough to try reading it across devices (you can read across six devices or apps) – from the Paperwhite to the Kindle app on my iPad. In fact, the addition of the “Book Browser” tab in the Kindle app is a winner – it Gives one access to all the titles (Amazon claims there are over a million) Kindle Unlimited has to offer. A caveat: All borrowed titles are deleted the moment you cancel the subscription. Limp is heavily populated by Amazon’s own titles and self-published novels.
The Kindle Unlimited service has its competitors, most notably Scribd, Which a friend swears by. Also, many big publishers and popular authors are missing from the list. But if you want to dip your fingers in Certain stuff Normally you will not buy to read, or non-fiction like a lot, this is a nice sampler.
