With touch screen, Kindle is more attractive to “smartphone generation” – iG Technology

Leader in the segment of digital books on Brazil and the world, the Amazon has been improving year by year its line of Kindle e-readers. Late last year, the company launched in Brazil the newest version of its most basic e-reader, simply called Kindle (US $ 299).

The biggest news is the addition of a touch screen, previously present only in higher end models. On the other hand, the basic model of the Kindle does not have indoor lighting found in Paperwhite and Voyage models. See more details about the new Kindle the test

Pro:.

– Lightweight and convenient;
– Access to excellent collection of books Amazon

To:.

– It has internal lighting;
– Does not support the ePub format files, one of the most popular books digital.

design

While smartphones and tablets manufacturers invest to make the look of their most elegant and sophisticated products, Amazon does not moves a lot in the Kindle formula. The device has a functional and discreet design, without any detail that catches attention. The only physical button (on / off) is at the bottom of the device, next to the microUSB port used to charge the battery.

With only 191 grams, the Kindle is lighter than tablets with 7-inch screens, which usually weigh between 300g and 400g. The difference may seem small, but makes a difference especially when using the device with one hand. In general, it is a comfortable handset to hold and use.

Settings

No one gives a shit for the settings of an e-reader, but there will: the Kindle in 2014 has 1 GHz processor and 4 GB of storage. According to Amazon, the new processor allows a gain of 20% in the pages exchange rate over the previous model. In practice, as in the previous version, the page changes are quick and navigation between the resources of the machine too. There is a slight delay of less than one second between the touch screen and the action, but this is more a limitation of electronic ink (E-Ink) than the device configuration.

4 GB of memory for storing books is twice the previous version, but in practice does not really matter. Even if you can read thousands of books and fill the memory, all the works purchased are also on Amazon’s servers, so there with nothing to worry about.

screen

Touch screen makes it easy text selection

is the screen that is most change the new Kindle for its predecessor model: the presence of the touch detection technology.

Already present in more advanced models, the touch screen really makes navigation easier on pages and features of the device.

Better yet, the touch screen makes all the difference in time to mark passages of text and write notes, really boring task in models with conventional screen.

The sensitivity is not the same found in phones and tablets and the screen requires a bit more pressure on the fingers. But in testing the iG it was well to detect gestures and touches on the screen.

The touchscreen feature, however, is the only screen novelty. We were waiting for the inclusion of domestic lighting also in the basic version of the Kindle (currently, it is present only in Paperwhite and Voyage models). It makes sense that Amazon store this feature to their more expensive models and covers more so. But with strong competition from large tablets and smartphones, the illuminated screen is an increasingly important differentiator for an e-book reader.

The density of 167 dpi is lower than that of more expensive models, but in practice readability is great and even with a magnifying glass is practically impossible to see pixels on the screen.

system and store

Logo on your home screen, the Kindle brings the latest books user and also a bestseller list on Amazon. You can buy directly from the appliance books through the Wi-Fi connection. And the best reading experience certainly occurs in books purchased from the store, which currently has more than 40,000 titles in Portuguese and over 2.5 million in English.

As with other e-readers, support for PDFs works, but not always ideal mode. The files open, but sometimes the fonts are too small or too large, zoom is complicated, the text is cut off at the edges of appliances and so on.

One of the weaknesses of Kindle products is the lack of support for the ePub format, one of the most used in digital books. You can use programs like Calibre to convert the files to Mobi format or other standard supported by the Kindle, but is extra work.

Battery

The battery life is a strength of e-readers in general, when compared to tablets and smartphones. According to Amazon, a charge lasts up to a month with 30 minutes of reading a day and Wi-Fi turned off. This value may vary slightly, but certainly will be in the house at least two weeks with more intense use.

Conclusion

With price identical to that of its main competitors (Lev, Saraiva, and Kobo Touch, sold by Livraria Cultura), the Kindle is a convenient option for those who want to leave the physical books aside. The only feature that really is needed is the interior lighting for the time being present only in more expensive models.

For the competitors, the Kindle takes advantage of integration with the excellent collection of books from Amazon and also with equally great company applications (for those who want to switch between e-reader, tablet and smartphone) .
