“Bookstores will not be able to survive,” says creator of Kindle – EXAME.com

Handout

New Kindle Paperwhite

Kindle: “As an industry, I think that revolutionized the market editorial, which is scary and wonderful at the same time “

São Paulo – “People of the Amazon do not really care what you want as a consumer matter.” The phrase sounds amazing out of the mouth of Jason Merkoski first evangelist (responsible for disseminating new trends) of Amazon and one of those responsible for developing the digital book reader Kindle , released in 2007

Bookgenie451 startup founder, creator of software that identifies reading interests of students to recommend textbooks, Merkoski mix optimism with caution when it comes to digital books.

On Thursday, 21 he comes to Brazil to participate in the 5th International Congress of the CBL Digital Book, in Sao Paulo, which will talk about his book Burning the page: The eBook Revolution and the Future of Reading (yet untitled Portuguese), in which decrees the end of the printed book. The newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, he gave more details on the changes and problems that provides for the publishing market.

You decrees the end of the printed book, but sales of tablets and e-readers begin to stabilize without this having happened. what is needed to popularize the digital book?

What most influences the popularity is the selection of titles. What we saw happen in the United States and Japan is that once people can find 80% of titles in digital seeking, the chance that they migrate to e-books is 100%.

How long does this change happen?

About three years after that digital books are available in a country.

streaming services books can help popularize this?

The problem of streaming services like Amazon is that they have several books in the catalog that people want to read. One of the challenges is to define a pricing model for e-books, which does not exist today. Until this is done will be difficult to make streaming a satisfactory experience and its sustainable cost.

You expect these impacts when he helped create the Kindle?

As an industry, I think that we have revolutionized the publishing industry, which is scary and wonderful at the same time. As a business owner of digital books, say it is very difficult to work with publishers today because their world is collapsing. It’s as if they were on the Titanic after hitting the iceberg without life jackets with the boat on fire and alien ships gunning the boat. Publishers are confused and afraid.

We have problems with the collection and use of data on our reading habit?

Certainly. It will not take to start seeing advertisements within e-books. But I’m not really concerned with what Amazon and Google will know about me because I think I’ve accepted that, inevitably, they will know things somehow.

These data also generate recommendations for reading. This facility can have a downside, as the reader away in favor of classic bestseller?

Some content may be neglected for sure. The problem of classic books is that they are not sexy and are not promoted on the entry page of Amazon because the company will not make money with them. The least favorite book of the turn to digital is the culture of the moment. We recommend only current things. Tools of recommendation need to improve.

You’ve said in interviews that it’s hard to love Amazon …

I think the role of the largest companies is not to be in my face while I’m reading. They may be more subtle and I believe that this is a role that Amazon is bad. Today retailers can learn who you are. It would be interesting if such information was passed on to publishers create content. But retailers retain all data. That’s why the system is broken.

What will happen to the written word?

I really think the future of the written word is being spoken, because writing is slow. The books of the future will be spoken because everything revolves around talking today. Devices such as the iPhone, with Siri, allow you to talk on the phone what you want to do.

believes that libraries and bookstores will even end?

I do not think the future will be good. My studies show that in the last three years the students spent 70% less time in the libraries of universities. Where are they getting information? In Wikipedia or sites.

The book stores can not survive and will disappear. Sobrarão just a few, specialized in printed books, such as those that sell vinyl records. Will remain in Google and Amazon, unfortunately market. I know the people of the Amazon. And they do not care what you want as a consumer. They care about how to get more profit.

One way to do this is pushing popular books, neglecting others. And unfortunately people will accept. The curator of titles is in the hands of retailers.

Spot the Kindle Boring Book by Looking at Popular Highlights – Lifehacker

Spot the Boring Book by Looking at Kindle Popular Highlights

Looking for a good book to read this summer? If you want one que will not bore you halfway through, mathematics teacher Jordan Ellenberg has an interesting tip:. Look at the Kindle highlights

His theory: if the most Occur popular highlights in the first half of the book, it might mean que people are not reading it all the way through:

How can we find today’s greatest non-reads? Amazon’s “Popular Highlights” feature Provides one quick and dirty measure. Every book’s Kindle page lists the five most highlighted passages by readers. If every reader is getting to the end, Those highlights Could be scattered throughout the length of the book. . If nobody has made it past the introduction, the popular highlights will be clustered at the beginning

Thus, the Hawking Index (HI): Take the page numbers of the book’s top five highlights, average Them, and divide by the number of pages in the whole book. The higher the number, the more of the book we’re guessing most people are Likely to have read. (Disclaimer: This is not remotely scientific and is for entertainment purposes only!)

Of course, this has a few downsides. Not only is it not “remotely scientific,” but it only works with books Actually you have-it does not work with samples (annoyingly). However, if you like to grab books from the free Kindle Lending Library (or you use the new Kindle Unlimited), You could check the book’s before highlights you start reading.

It’s not a perfect trick, but it’s a clever one that’s worth keeping in your back pocket if reader reviews do not leave you feeling confident.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite memory doubles in Brazil – Tecnoblog (Blog)

kindle-video-paperwhite

surprise, Amazon has doubled the internal storage of the Kindle Paperwhite for new buyers. The ebook reader before with 2GB of storage space for books, now comes with 4 GB factory. The change was noted in July by a German blog on American Amazon store. The Tecnoblog found that the new capability also applies to much of the units for sale in Brazil.

The page on the old Kindle Paperwhite, which remains in the air in the Brazilian Amazon, reports that the product had 2 GB of flash memory, with 1.25 GB available to the user. At the top, you see a bar with a link pointing to the “latest version of Kindle Paperwhite”. As in the United States, the storage capacity has been omitted in the new product page.

 kindle-paperwhite-Brazil-old

The new version of Kindle Paperwhite comes with 4 GB of internal storage, 3.1 GB is available to the user, about 2.5 times the space of the previous model. According to Amazon, the space is enough to store more than 1,100 digital books. The price remains the same in Brazil:. 479 reais, or 399 dollars in the temporary promotion

The Paperwhite Kindle 4 GB is being sold by the Brazilian Amazon online store since at least Thursday (14 ). To the promotion of Father’s Day on Sunday, the Amazon site still pointed to the old version of the page. Ponto Frio, another store selling ebooks reader, Kindle Paperwhite still appears to have 2 GB of memory. Amazon confirms the Tecnoblog that “some stores” already have the new model.

The additional space, for now, is only for the Kindle Paperwhite cheaper, with Wi-Fi . In Brazil, the model with free 3G, which costs 699 dollars, still being sold with 2 GB of internal storage. In the United States, the capacity has been doubled. In Japan, it received a special edition of Kindle Paperwhite, the reader of ebooks already had 4 GB of both variants.

All you need to know about the Kindle Unlimited, the “Netflix for books” of … – Tecnoblog (Blog)

kindle-unlimited

The Amazon confirmed expectations and launched on Friday (18), the Kindle Unlimited, a service that offers unlimited access to a catalog of more than 600 000 thousands of ebooks and audiobooks with a monthly subscription of $ 9.99. No deadline for returning the books can be read both as Kindle readers on smartphones, tablets and computers with free Kindle app.

How this business works?

Thinking on Kindle Unlimited as a “Netflix for books” is the easiest way to understand how the service works. In the Amazon page, there is an option to enjoy the Kindle for 30 days Unlimited. While you subscribe, you will receive a monthly charge of $ 10 on credit card and can read as many books as you want your account tied to the device. To unsubscribe, ebooks are automatically removed from your collection.

As far as the Kindle in the Amazon store, next to the buy button, there will be a button to “read for free” in more than 600 000 works. Once the ebook is downloaded, you can read it as if it were his:.’s Sync with Whispersync, which means the page, markings and annotations are synchronized between all your devices

 kindle-read-unlimited-of-grace

Audiobooks can be heard on the Android and iOS

Audiobooks can be heard on the Android and iOS

There is no deadline to return, but there is a limit of 10 ebooks borrowed simultaneously. When you try to read the eleventh book, Amazon will suggest returning the borrowed ebook longer – but you can select another. At any time, a borrowed ebook can be downloaded again previously, including markings synchronized in the cloud.

In addition to text-books, the Kindle allows Unlimited access just over 2000 audiobooks, but they can only be heard on devices with sound, which includes none of Kindle readers sold today (Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite), only the tablets and Kindle Fire Android and iOS devices with the official application of the Kindle. The file size varies; here, spent 156 MB to download the audiobook of The Hobbit .

Not available in Brazil, but …

The Kindle Unlimited was only released in the United States, but the service works in Brazil if you have an American Amazon account with an American address. The credit card must be international, but not necessarily issued in the United States.

If you fit the above case, should have no difficulty to test and sign the service. If the account is Brazilian, you can migrate it to an American without losing the purchases already made (however, you can not purchase new content in Amazon.com.br). Just go into Manage Your Kindle and select “Settings country.” In “Brazil”, click the “Change” link, fill with American address and save the changes. You can return to a Brazilian account at any time by the reverse path.

In comparison to the Brazilian Amazon, the Amazon American has a larger amount of ebooks (2.7 million vs. 2.2 million), but less titles in Portuguese (27 000 against 35 000). Prices are not fully connected: some books are cheaper on American store; others, in the Brazilian.

You & # x and; may sign The Globe and Zero Hour on Amazon (but n & # XE3;'s in Brazil)

You can subscribe to The Globe and Zero Hour on Amazon (but not in Brazil)

In the American Amazon, you can purchase audiobooks and make subscriptions to newspapers and magazines, such as <> The Globe Zero Hour The New York Times National Geographic and Vogue . Strangely, even with Brazilian newspapers, the signature is not available in Brazil, so if you do the reverse path (migrate an American account for a Brazilian), their signatures will be automatically canceled.

And when the Kindle Unlimited will be officially launched in Brazil? Sought by Tecnoblog , Amazon said that “does not comment on future plans.” As the service still does not work even in the UK, another major market for Amazon, it is good to wait sitting.

What’s good to read?

At the time of writing this paragraph, there are 639,000 books available in Kindle Unlimited, just under a quarter of the 2.7 million ebooks from the American store. Many titles are not available, but Amazon highlights some known works: can you read the trilogy The Lord of The Rings , the seven books Harry Potter , and . 2001: A Space Odyssey The Hobbit and Life of Pi , eg

All the books are up in english but there are also fewer than 8000 titles on Kindle Portuguese Unlimited

 kindle-unlimited-home

The problem is that, as in Netflix, releasing the contents requires trade agreements. And the five major American publishers (Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin and Random House Simon & amp; Schuster) have not provided many books, so there are a number of famous titles missing. Much of Unlimited Kindle books, including works in Portuguese, are small independent publishers or authors.

So even if 600 000 ebooks seem much in practice the story is a little different, and the collection is still weak if you are only interested in the best sellers.

 kindle-bestseller-unlimited

How weak? Among the list of 20 best-selling Kindle ebooks, only 3 are on Kindle Unlimited: My Mother Was Nuts , in 1; Pines , in 13; and One Lavender Ribbon , in 20th. In the category Computers and Technology, the situation improves (10 of 20 can be read for free), but most books are guides and tutorials -. Nothing to read for free the biography of Steve Jobs or the new book by Glenn Greenwald, therefore

Among the books in Portuguese, the thing is even sadder, but it is even understandable if we consider that the service officially or works in Brazil. The list of the top 20, only one is on the Kindle Unlimited. And indeed, this unique book is not facing Brazilians, but for foreigners who wish to learn the Portuguese language.

Is it worth the effort?

The price of $ 9.99 a month is quite attractive. If you consider that many ebooks cost that price or even more, just ask one or two books borrowed and the monthly subscription was worth it.

But Amazon still needs to improve the collection for Kindle Unlimited be really advantageous. 600 000 ebooks is a lot, but a very small portion of these books is what people want to read. I’m sure that most of you reading this text would quietly 10 hours per month watching movies and series on Netflix, but would not spend the same amount of hours reading random books on Amazon.

The question is whether Amazon will boost the availability of books and, more importantly, whether it will be able to convince publishers that the business model is interesting. We are so accustomed to streaming movies or music services, but not for books – although already existed before the Kindle Unlimited options such as Oyster. I, as a reader, I find great pay only $ 10 to read as many books as you want. But being on the other side, commanding a publisher, I do not know if toparia receive only a few cents per user.

Kindle Unlimited; ‘Netflix of books’ has launched the Amazon bestsellers – Globo.com

The Amazon launched the Kindle Unlimited, a sort of Netflix for books. The user pays a fixed monthly amount to have an unlimited access to over 600,000 e-books and thousands of audiobooks at no additional cost. The tool, however, is available only in the United States in this first phase of deployment. But you can try it free for 30 days if you have an American account

Top 10. Facebook reveals list of ‘most pops’ public figures
network

The similarity with the services of streaming video and music, such as Netflix and Spotify, respectively, is great. The user has a trial period without pay, in case one month (30 days). After that, if you want to continue to enjoy, pay the monthly fee, which is $ 9.99 (about £ 23) per month.

Do you think Facebook will have the same order that Orkut? Comment on the TechTudo Forum.

The most interesting thing is that the service works only on devices from the Kindle line. Any device with a Kindle app, whether tablet, phone, computer or digital books (e-reader) player is compatible with Kindle Unlimited. The idea is to encourage readers to not only read your favorite publications to discover new books and authors.

“Unlimited With Kindle, you do not need to think twice before trying a new author or genre. You can only get to read or hear, “explains vice president of Amazon’s Kindle division, Russ Grandinetti.

The books are accessible by traditional Kindle Store, and when they are available to subscribers Unlimited’s grace, will have a “Read for Free” (Read Grace) button instead of “Buy” (Buy “). The complete catalog can be seen in “Kindle Books Unlimited” and has hits and bestsellers as:. Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Atlantis and more

Unfortunately for Brazilian users, all publications are in English and the service is limited to United States consumers. Can not even register to test it with an account of Brazil in the Amazon. . However, with an American Amazon login, also with registered address in the USA and the credit card must be international you can start using

With “Netflix for books,” Amazon wants to expand influence in publishing – Last Second – iG

“Netflix for books” was the nickname given to Kindle Unlimited, service launched by Amazon in which by paying a monthly subscription, you can read many e-books you want. Announced two weeks ago, the novelty of the online commerce giant handled the publishing market, which assesses the impact of the model for authors, publishers and readers.

Not yet available in Brazil, Kindle Unlimited snake just under $ 10 (£ 22) per month and allows the user to read an unlimited number of books within a catalog of 600,000 titles. The system works more like a library than as bookstore: the reader “rents” the works, but do not own them; if the subscription is canceled, the book is taken from the e-reader.

Selling ebooks by monthly subscription are new trend in the U.S.

service can extend the already enormous influence Amazon in publishing and e-books, the company helped strengthen with the launch of the Kindle in 2007. Today, only digital books for adults turnover of U.S. $ 1.3 billion (£ 2.9 billion) in the United States, according to data from the Association of American Publishers concerning 2013.

Between the Kindle and its competitors like Apple iBooks and Kobo, 79 million Americans will use e-readers in 2014, nearly 9% more than last year, according to research from eMarketer.

iG Culture Follow on Twitter

The Amazon is the first major company to invest in the book market by subscription, but the service is already offered by smaller U.S. companies as Oyster and Scribd. For similar to the Kindle Unlimited tuition, they offer unlimited access to 500 000 and 400 000 titles, respectively.

The three companies are betting on the idea that the consumption of digital media subscription, which has worked for services like Netflix and Spotify, here to stay. But it is unclear whether the system has the same appeal when applied to literature:. Anyway, most people read less books per month than watching movies or listening to music

Some of the books available on Kindle Unlimited

class=” “There is a difference consumption of the product and the habit of the reader. Film I watch in an hour and a half. If a book can take two weeks or more, “said Breno Lerner, superintendent of the publisher Improvements, in an interview with iG .

Two weeks is just:. Data released in January by the Pew Research Center indicate that average Americans read 5 books in 2013 For these consumers, the Kindle Unlimited sign may be less interesting than buying e-books individually. Amazon Prime, the company itself may be a more favorable option, since, for the cheapest price, offers video content, advantages in delivering products and the “loan” of a free e-book per month.

Amazon

x publishers

For more voracious readers (2% of users Scribd read more than 10 articles per month, according to the “New York Times”), the that will make a difference will be the acquis. Like Netflix, none of the subscription services of books offers very recent releases and the number of titles available is relatively small: the complete catalog of the Amazon, for example, exceeds 2.5 million e-books

Also, unlike the Oyster and Scribd, Kindle Unlimited for now excludes works of five major American publishers: Penguin Random House, Macmillan, HarperCollins, Hachette and Simon & Schuster.

Stephen King is one of 900 authors who signed the letter against Hachette Amazon

The absence was not officially commented, but for months Amazon catches a dispute with Hachette. The company was accused of using aggressive tactics – including the late delivery of works from the publisher – to secure advantage in price negotiations and be able to increase their income by selling e-books.

The arrival of the Kindle should Unlimited complicate the already difficult negotiations between publishers and the company regarding the payment. You can, for example, that the service runs pulling a drop in prices does not apply to publishers.

“There is a concern in that the subscription service can devalue the books to make them ‘free industry , ‘”said Mark Coker, Creator of Smashword of self-publishing and distribution platform for e-books.

The site Coker is the largest provider of securities Oyster and Scribd, with over 250,000 titles available at each service. But he does not do business with Amazon, as the company only gives space to independent authors who sell him exclusivity, ie, withdraw his work from all competing systems.

New authors

Negotiation is delicate: on the one hand, the author takes advantage of the structure and scope of the Amazon; on the other, submits to a system of uncertain payment. Oyster and Scribd, the amount paid for each book is previously defined in the contract. Unlimited on Kindle, varies each month, with the division of a fund of all works “borrowed” setting the unit price.

“The Oyster and Scridb, our authors earn 60% of the sale price “says Coker. “The Kindle Unlimited pay under the same terms, which means that the authors of most expensive books will earn less in signatures than conventional sales.”

Nook from Barnes and Noble, Amazon’s Kindle competitor

Author of digital “Game of color Papeletes” and “The Center of the Universe”, the writer Paul Santoro thinks Unlimited arriving on Kindle is more attractive in the U.S. market, given the significant market share from Amazon.

“If the new service take revenge, the book will offer a huge window of exposure, suggesting it worth changing the percentage of sales at online bookstores diminuito payment each streaming of the book,” he says. “In Brazil, operated volume does not indicate that it could be worth at first.”

tasting free

One of the advantages of the Kindle and Unlimited other services by subscription books is to encourage users to take a chance the work of authors who do not know – and risk test, after all, does not cost anything. “Readers will no longer have the burden of having to decide whether the book is worth the investment,” said Coker.

The stimulus is also viewed favorably by James Ferro, partner at Brazilian publisher of digital books and -galaxy. “But this will vary according to the catalog available. If too full, the novice author will have to fight the established names. If incomplete, readers will not feel attracted to the product. Question is which way will the balance.”

Iron finds it difficult to opine on whether the Kindle Unlimited revenge in Brazil, where e-books are on high: even if the market share is small, 2.3%, sales rose from R $ 3 , 8 million in 2012 to R $ 12.7 million in 2013, according to data released last week by the Brazilian Book Chamber.

“I would not know to evaluate a product before its arrival,” said Ferro. “It depends on the business model with authors and publishers, as will the catalog, ease of access and the price for the reader.”

The superintendent Improvement agrees and adds that, as of now, does not see the new service from Amazon as a threat. “I am content provider. Media who will ask for is the consumer,” he says. “If you want to e-book, I will do. CD If you want, I do. If you want clay tablet, I’ll figure out how to do.”
