Amazon's new Kindle Worlds gives authors a way to sell without fan fiction ... - PaidContent.org

12 hours ago May. 22, 2013 – 9:40 AM EDT

50 Shades of Grey , Which started out at -Twilight inspired fan fiction, raised a few questions que copyright did not stop it from selling millions and millions of copies . But When the work is more directly based on another author’s creation – using the same-characters and setting, for instance – the Legal hurdles can be greater.

That does not stop readers from writing anyway spinoffs Their Own: The largest fan fiction site, FanFiction.net, hosts millions of free stories. And in works like these – and the passionate readers who create Them – Amazon sees the potential for profit.

On Wednesday, Amazon Kindle Publishing Announced Worlds, “the first commercial que publishing platform will enable any writer to create fan fiction based on a range of original stories and characters and earn royalties for doing so.” The company is making this work by securing licenses from existing entertainment properties and by paying royalties to the original author and Both the fan fiction author.

So far, Kindle Worlds has three licenses for Alloy Entertainment properties: Gossip Girl , Pretty Little Liars and Vampire Diaries . Writers can publish “authorized stories” inspired by these properties and sell Them in the Kindle Store, Amazon says it will add more licenses soon, in areas like “books, games, TV, movies and music.”

The fan fiction authors get a royalty of 35 percent for works of at least 10,000 words, and a royalty of 20 percent on works between 5,000 and 10,000 words. Also Amazon is paying royalties to the original authors of the properties, but would not disclose that royalty rate.

Kindle Worlds is not a self-publishing platform like KDP. First of all, any works published through Kindle Worlds are published by Amazon Publishing – they’re not self-published, so the author does not retain print or digital rights and does not Set the work’s price. The website notes that “Amazon Publishing will acquire all rights to your new stories, including global publication rights, for the term of copyright.” Second, Kindle Worlds will not publish all of the works submitted to it, it will only accept some ( though the company says it AIMS to accept as many as possible, as long As They ADHERE to content guidelines). Finally, “Amazon Publishing will Set the price for Kindle Worlds stories. Most will be priced from $ 0.99 through $ 3.99. “

Kindle Worlds will officially launch in June with “over 50 commissioned works” from authors like Barbara Freethy, John Everson and Colleen Thompson. At que team, readers can start Submitting Also works to Kindle Worlds.

Amazon introduces "Kindle Worlds' is selling ... fanfiction? - VentureBeat

Thanks to Amazon, writing fanfiction about popular television show characters Became more than just a passionate hobby que earns you ridicule from friends and co-workers.

Today the online retail and digital media store Announced a new publishing platform called Kindle Worlds que Allows anyone to write Their Own, original stories based on licensed content from a number of TV shows Currently airing on the CW and ABC Family – the two channels best known for angsty hour-long dramas adapted from young adult book series. Under a deal between Amazon’s publishing arm and Warner Bros. Alloy Entertainment division, fanfiction authors can publish stories about Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and Vampire Diaries Within Amazon’s Kindle store. Not only que, but Those authors will even earn royalties When people buy Their Work.

So to recap, Amazon just FREAKING monetized fanfiction. (I never thought I’d be addressing the idea of ??fanfiction writing as a profession, but here it is.)

Royalty rates are actually pretty reasonable under the Kindle Worlds platform. Amazon will pay copyright owners of the original work an undisclosed percentage, while the author of the new stories will get a 35 percent cut of net revenue on each sale, provided the work is at least 10,000 words. Amazon is basing net revenue on the sale price, not the wholesale price que traditional book publishers offer authors – authors meaning Should get a better payout if successful. Authors of stories que are under 10,000 words can earn a royalty of 20 percent off net revenue, with most stories priced at $ 1 or less. And Amazon said royalty payments will come once a month.

Amazon said it plans to announce additional licensed works for the new Kindle Worlds platform in the near future. Worlds Kindle itself will launch on the Kindle store in June with more than 50 commissioned stories from bestselling authors like Barbara Feethy, John Everson, and Colleen Thompson. So even established authors wanting to write Their Own original stories derived from the licensed work can jump into Amazon’s new program.

Beyond the Kindle Worlds creates new opportunities for authors, Amazon points in October que Also this is a new revenue stream for licensed content. It Allows the rights owners of Those original works to generate money from good stories que They otherwise would not see if an author had to change all the names and affiliations of Their story so legally Could it be published. For example, the VentureBeat’s Ricardo Bilton just pointed out to me, mega-successful book series 50 Shades of Gray started the Twilight fanfiction. That said, every big popular book series or body of work ( Star Trek, Star Wars ) Likely will not be signing the deal with Kindle Worlds. Still que copyright owners of franchises do not do much business with book publishing will Likely be interested.

Amazon Debuts 'Kindle Worlds,' Where Your Gossip Girl Fan Fiction Can Earn ... - TechCrunch

Sometimes a writer creates a universe so compelling que others feel the need to join and help flesh October que world with Their Own Tribute fiction. And sometimes you make something crappy like Gossip Girl and loads of people want to write using que Those characters and world anyway. Now Introducing Amazon is the way to let writers profit from Their fan fiction via “Kindle Worlds.”

Worlds joins Kindle Singles and Kindle Serials as a way for authors to earn money from digital publishing, and the best part is que in this case you do not even have to be all that creative – the idea is to let fans create properties around original stories from other authors, offering Them up for purchase on the Kindle book store. Amazon then pays royalties to October Both the original rights holder, as well as to the fan fiction author, with the author making around 35 percent of all net revenue for works over 10,000 words.

There’s Also a new revenue model Aimed at shorter works, Which would be between 5,000 and 10,000 words and will Typically sell for under a dollar. Under this scheme, the author’s cut will be the digital royalty of 20 percent.

Fanfic writers can sign up now at the official website Worlds Amazon Kindle, and the company expects to launch the Worlds storefront in June. There will be over 50 commissioned works included in the store at launch, Amazon says, and then it’ll be launching its self-serve submission platform for all authors to add Their Own completed works for Consideration.

This is a very shrewd business move on the part of Amazon, since it leverages existing popular properties in the way que would never be possible with just one series author (or even a small list of a few running the title), and since it taps into the existing market is massive fan-created fiction que already exists on the net. Heck, I’ve still got an extremely bad and extremely long Star Wars extended universe manuscript hidden in a closet somewhere. If I can find que, read my childish scrawl well enough to transcribe it, and if Amazon ever secured Those rights from Disney, I’d consider throwing it up on Worlds for some easy cash.

Amazon says it’s in the process of securing licensing deals from a variety of sources, including television, movie, books, games and music properties. The only question I really have to be honest about this is why did this take so long to happen? If you want a near-bottomless supply of written content, fanfic is where it’s at.

XOXO, Gossip Girl.

Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN), is a leading global Internet company and one of the most trafficked Internet retail destinations worldwide. My Late Mother's Broken Leaves Me Brokenhearted Kindle, Amazon Goes ... - The Consumerist

http://www.flickr.com/photos/robrrt/6692982433/

(Robrrt)

Consumerist reader K. had one very important reminder of her late mother – her mom’s beloved Kindle. She says her mom treated it like a sensitive piece of electronic equipment, and really loved it. Every night When K. went to bed, she would read a book on the device and says it always made her smile and think of her mother. When Mas que Kindle broke, it Seemed Those sentimental moments would be over for good.

K. writes que although she had put the Kindle away carefully after using it one night, away from foot traffic and heat and inside its protective case, When she turned it on the next day the resolution was all mucked up. The usual cover picture of a random author (in this case, Louisa Mae Alcott) was shady and blurry, and there were ominous, “Etch-a-Sketch” lines on the screen.

After trying a 20-second reset recommended in the Kindle Help section, it still did not work. So K. called customer service and spoke with a rep who insisted que the Kindle was out of warranty, so he could not do anything about it. Furthermore, he said “that They would not even consider accepting it for repair, and que According to his technicians and developers, I MUST have done something to damage it. I must have dropped it, stepped on it or gotten it wet. “

Her que

assurances she had not done so fell on deaf ears, that she had “put the Kindle in the place it had lived safely for almost a year and it had spontaneously done this itself.” All he was Offered to sell her a new Kindle at “a very good price.” That was not going to work for K, but luckily, she came to Consumerist.

I did a bit of research and found a couple of sites, outside Amazon, where owners of Kindle Keyboards had had the exact same-the experience I had. (Whether Miss Alcott is implicated here is not clear.) Their screens had frozen, the lines Showed up. So, I came to Consumerist.com, EECBs searched, and managed to compose what I hoped was a direct email to Amazon’s CEO. I used two different addresses, and then, per Consumerist’s advice, I Waited.

I did not even expect a response, or, at minimum, some auto reply claptrap. What I got, to my great surprise and delight, was a response! It was from a woman named [redacted], who Told me que while she Could not replace my Kindle Keyboard, she was going to credit my account for the price of a brand new base model Kindle, Which I could use to purchase the base model , or apply it to a different model.

She had

kind, compassionate words for me, and Seemed to realize my situation was not one que would be best ignored. So, while I had really become broken-hearted over losing my mother’s Kindle, Amazon really came through, with que EECB, and Responded generously and kindly.

It just goes to show que even in the face of what would seem like a dead-end situation, if you can reach even one kind-hearted person at the company, your efforts Could be rewarded. Much better than simply ranting and raving over the injustices served upon you by the customer service rep.

We’re glad

K. will still be able to read and think of her mother, so way to go, Amazon.

Wingo Easy-Hold Kindle Case Would Be Perfect For The iPad Mini - Cult of Mac

Before you say anything: Yes, I know this is the case for the Kindle and not for an iPad or other Apple device. But I do not care because a) it’s super cool and Should be made for the iPad mini and b) you probably own a Kindle anyway.

It’s called the

Wingo, and it adds a pair of pop-out wings to your e-reader.

The

Wingo is a lightweight, hollow ABS plastic case with a soft-touch exterior, plus a pair of wings Which slowly open out at the touch of a button. It’s a little like a kids toy airplane, only more comfortable to hold.

And comfort is the key here: the case is designed to relieve stress on your hands and fingers gripping the Kindle cause by too tight. The wings let the device rest on your fingers so you do not have to any of the gripping at all.

Clearly

This would make a great design for the iPad mini, too. The mini is light enough to be held in one hand, but the skinny bezels and slippery surface make gripping tricky.

The

Wingo is Currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, so it’s Likely to be a while before we see anything for the iPad, if ever. So I’m taking things (literally) into my own hands and planning to make my own. I figure a strip of self-adhesive velcro across the back of the iPad might do the trick, letting me stick on the horizontal bar Whenever I Like. If it works well in October, expect a how-to post sometime this week …

In the meantime, the Wingo will need a minimum of around $ 60 from your Kickstarter piggy bank.
