Kindle, Kobo or Lev: Which e-reader is the most cost-effective? – Globo.com

Paper books still did not die, but that future can not be far if it depends on Kindle digital readers, Lev and Kobo. Made to put together a library in your pocket and not tire the eyes to read thanks to technology E-Ink screen, these devices are gaining more and more fans in Brazil. The three can now be purchased here and have very similar price. If you are considering getting one, see the comparison before we prepare and find out which one has the best value for money.

About the Kindle ‘cheapie’ sold in Brazil

Design: Draw

digital book readers are made thinking in the content, so its design is often understated. This is what can be seen when comparing Kindle, and Kobo Lev, comfortable devices to load by weighing less than 200 g and bring compact body. Among them, the smaller the Kobo, the most robust version Kobo Aura measuring only 8 mm thick. Kindle and Lev are slightly thicker at 10.2 mm and 9 mm, respectively.

The three models feature plastic finish with a textured material on the back, which makes loading with only one hand. The Kobo is what most differentiates this regard to be a bit more padded back, however, in the end, not enough to make any significant difference to the user.

The Lev is the only which brings a physical button on the front, for the opening of the menu on the home screen or reading a book. When using Kobo and Kindle, this task is made by touching the top of the touch screen, which displays a virtual menu

Hardware and Performance:. Kindle

With the arrival of the new Kindle, there is now no e-reader models without touchscreen for sale in Brazil. Both the Kobo Touch as Lev already offered the feature, which is now also seen in all versions of the device Amazon . But the user experience is not enough to be the same between them.

The Kobo has some difficulty in effectively identify the user touches, which may have problems to score text and make notes . Lev is not enough to have this defect, but not included with the precision offered by the Kindle:. It, all commands are accepted more quickly, which means more comfort and fluidity on usability

Amazon’s e-reader is also the most efficient in the speed of transition screens, presenting an overall performance slightly superior to competitors. The difference is small but noticeable, but should not be the main selling factor in this case.

In terms of hardware, the most important thing to consider is the screen quality, where there is a technical draw if we consider that the three brands have models with 6-inch display and versions with 758 x 1024 pixel resolution (Kindle Paperwhite, Kobo Aura and Lev). There are also more modest versions of Kobo and Kindle, both with screens 800 x 600 pixel resolution, and the Kobo Aura, the only e-reader Full HD.

Storage: Kobo and Lev

This is a question that Kobo and Lev bring large advantage over the Kindle. That’s because the two have an SD card slot, allowing the user to expand the memory of the e-reader when needed. Who buys the Kindle therefore is limited to the internal 4GB, although this space is enough to store up to 2000 books.

The trick, therefore, it is better for those who want to read comics or PDF files in heavy and with many images. If you are an ordinary reader of texts, the presence of the entrance to the memory card is indifferent

Library:. Kindle and Lev

The Lev takes the lead in the number of titles in Portuguese offered by Saraiva, leaving the second Kindle and Kobo, the Bookstore Culture in third. But if you consider books in English and other languages, as well as works that were only released in digital media, there is no doubt: the Amazon is much higher than Saraiva and Culture together

. If you plan to purchase books from external sources, the Kobo is certainly the best choice. It is what supports more e-book formats, including the popular ePub, making it ideal to run content downloaded from the Internet in this format and transfer to the Kobo via USB cable. The Kindle does the same, but only to the MOBI format, forcing the user to convert e-books in ePub for that extension before reading. Here’s how the procedure.

But the Lev is the most recommended for students who need to read many PDF files. He is the only of the three with Reflow, resource rearranging the text on the screen for easy font resizing and make reading comfortable PDFs – Kindle and Kobo work with pure PDF, requiring the screen to be moved sideways to give . Zoom in on text

Kindle, Kobo or Lev: In your opinion, what leads is the best? Comment on TechTudo Forum

Interface: Kobo

The Kobo is certainly the which has the best user interface among the three. It has the right balance between organization and visual attractiveness, with graphically arranged content on the screen in “shelves”. Both Kindle as Lev are simpler, producing books in lists, and the Amazon the only device that allows you to create collections.

The Lev is the most complicated to use in order to use resources help in reading. To make a note, for example, it takes many steps until you enter the text, while the Kindle this task is extremely simple. The Kobo would be good at this point whether the screen low sensitivity not adversely affect the accuracy of marking text and typing on the virtual keyboard

Battery:. Draw

The three e-readers have very similar battery performance. There are variations between the models of each brand, but if we consider the best of each, you can read about two hours a day for a month before the battery runs out. Overall, the experience you have is to actually forget to carry them, given the brutal difference in energy performance compared to smartphones and tablets

Price and availability:. Draw

You can purchase any of the three devices at the same value if we consider the simplest models:. R $ 299 by Kobo Touch, New Kindle or Lev The price goes up a little for models with lighting, with Lev With Light the cheapest, sold for $ 399 Kobo Glo and Kindle Paperwhite both cost £ 479. The Kobo still have the Aura, sold at R $ 659; and Amazon has the Kindle Paperwhite 3G with free data connection, available from £ 699 All can be purchased on the official websites of Saraiva Culture and Amazon, or retailers like Extra and Ponto Frio in the case of Kindle.

Conclusion

After the analysis, we found that the Kindle does justice to the fame he has and maybe the best package delivery between three e-readers available in Brazil. In terms of ecosystem, it takes a large margin due to the size of the Amazon and the size of its collection in all languages.

But as every product, it does not please everyone. If you want more freedom and independence of Calibre, e-book conversion software, the Kobo may be your best choice. Similarly, Lev appeals more to consumers who only read in Portuguese or need a device that runs PDF to perfection.

Kindle or Print? Librarians Weigh In | Not Dead Yet – Library Journal

Cheryl LaGuardia I do not feel comfortable without a book nearby (a print book, that is). And the older I get, the more books I read at the same team; Usually I’m in the midst of two or three. This is the boast, because I’ve religiously avoided reading serious literature ever since the course que required me to read Nausea and The Death of Ivan illyich in the same week. Now I read mostly mysteries, Which i could argue are, in fact, serious literature, but I do not because I would not want Then to read Them anymore. I get a lot o f paperbacks from Amazon, Especially since I recently Discovered how cheaply I can get used paperbacks there (I Also get lots of used paperbacks from the Harvard Bookstore in the interest of supporting brick and mortar bookstores).

Then one of my favorite mystery writers released the novella only in the Kindle version available through Amazon. I broke down, downloaded the Kindle app to my laptop, bought the novella, and read it online. For me, it was an empty experience. I did not enjoy it much Nearly the the the print books by this author. The words just kind of lay there on the screen, and I found the annoying glare (I experience this Constantly in my work, but it worse felt When I was reading for fun). I have not bought any more ebooks. I Have Been trying to read From Manassas to Appomattox. Memoirs of the Civil War in America at the Internet Archive, but it’s been slow going in the online format

I think I ‘m going to be in big trouble if print publishing ever goes the way of the dodo … but will it? I wonder. The much I love the electronic library resources (and I do! I really do! I much prefer doing research online to in print!), I do not love ebooks for pleasure reading, and I wonder just how much others Actually read ebooks and enjoy Them. And of course que led to my Sending Out a one-question survey. The survey question was this:

For your pleasure reading:

  • ___ Kindle (Nook, iPad, iPhone, other e-reader) OR
  • ___ print?

That was it. I sent the “survey” to about 60 colleagues at home and around the country. They included academic, public, school, and special librarians, Archivists, administrators, and digital specialists. Some Were seasoned librarians, some Were newbies (or relative newbies), add Were baby boomers, some Were digital natives, Gen X, Gen Y, Millennials … you get the idea. I got a terrific response, and most people Said they’d be very interested in hearing the results. So Here They are:

  • Those who prefer an e-reader for pleasure reading: 8
  • Those who prefer print for pleasure reading: 31
  • Those who indulge in Both: 19

with others of my brief surveys, some of the comments que Accompanied the survey responses provided extra context, so here are a few of Those (completely anonymized, as always):

“I do not really like pleasure reading from my Kindle. I prefer when i am reading at home to read the [print] book. The navigation on my Kindle is not good. I hate not being able to flip back to re-read an important passage. When I go back to read in the [print] book, I can remember exactly where the paragraph was on the page. I can not do that with my Kindle. Also I love cracking open a new book and enjoying its smell, the feel of high quality paper, and the art work of the dust jacket. “

” I the read print but I like to read in bed so I can read on my iPad with the Kindle app without having the lights on-and the other thing I like about reading on the iPad is que I can look at Google maps to see the locations and things Referred to in my story. “

” Print, except When traveling, Then Kindle. “

” I stick to print but only because I get migraines and the glare / reflection from ereaders (Actually I own the one, but still prefer print) gets to me after long periods of reading. “

” For reading electronic pleasure is fine, I prefer is deeper reading print. Can not really answer because I feel They serve different purposes. “

” Kindle. I read more books, more Regularly [with it] than I ever have. “

” iPad, with a very occasional print book (so I find myself que occasional tapping the page of the print book to turn it …). “

” What the heck are Those Things you mention in the first line? Print-hands down. “

” Kindle on train. Print at home. “

” Both! The defining factor is if I want to share the book, if I’m reading on the beach, or traveling for more than a few weeks. “

” I use both. I like my iPhone when i travel (using Kindle) but the [print] book in bed unless options my husband complains about the light When I read in bed and Then I will switch to my phone. “

” Kindle for me! (This from the special collections librarian – it’s true, though) “

” Both.. When traveling I always take my Kindle because of weight / space constraints and Usually the print book (or two). Right now I’m reading print, but I Also read electronically. I’m not that picky. “

” PRINT !!!! “

” It’s funny because five minutes ago I was talking to a colleague about how I trend to read magazines in print. The New Yorker , Atlantic , law library journals. Most other pleasure reading is online, including trashy romance novels! “

One respondent asked if my survey was related to the recent Washington Post article,” Why digital natives prefer reading in print. Yes, you read that right. “It was not, but I found the article interesting Certainly, Considering the results of my wholly unscientific survey. The thing is, I do know who answered what, and I was struck by collegues preferences definitely did not run along age lines. There Were plenty of “young folks” who preferred print, just as there Were plenty of “seasoned folks” who preferred electronic or used both. For some, form Followed function / environment; for others, one format or the other was simply preferred. I do know what my preference is, but I respect the Differing preferences Also my colleagues Reported. May we all be able to of our reading pleasure in whatever format we prefer-for a very long team.

Best Android Tablets Gaming: Nvidia Shield Tablet Vs Amazon Kindle Fire HDX … – Tech Times

 Shield Tablet

With a massive back catalog of games post of the smartphone revolution, mobile device manufacturers are stuffing more processor power to push tablets into mobile gaming forward. We take a look at three tablets leading the revolution
(Photo: Image courtesy of NVidia).

There’s a war raging away from the controllers, big screens, keyboards, mice and monitors 144Hz When it comes to mobile gaming. Tablets are accelerating the growth of the already expanding market and device makers are shoring up features que have nothing to the with gaming, so it’s a good time to take a look at three of the biggest players.

Core gamers – the devout Sony Ponies, X-bots and PC Neckbeards – have long railed against the bite-sized games, touch controls and pay walls que defined mobile gaming. But opinions Appear to be shifting the the mobile market births enticing gems, such as Monument Valley, and carries ports of console games such as Limbo and Minecraft.

The three tablets listed in this roundup may not replace any dedicated hardware, but They Are worth a look for gamers in the market for new tablets:

Nvidia Shield Tablet ($ 399, 32GB version)

(Photo: NVidia)

The Shield Tablet was built with gamers in mind, Those Who Specifically own Nvidia GPUs. Consumers need to have Nvidia GPUs in order to stream games from the PC to the Tablet Shield. Remote streaming is one of the Shield Tablet’s most impressive features, but there are features That Could Attract AMD owners and casual gamers.

That Tegra K1 does not need a PC to bear the brunt workhorse of the processing work . The Shield Tablet has a growing collection of games optimized just for it. Current headliners include Trine 2, Half Life 2, Need for Speed Most Wanted and Portal.

Google Nexus 9 ($ 599, 32GB Version)

(Photo: TechCloud)

The Nexus 9 is about 140 percent more powerful in general, ACCORDING TO Passmark. It’s Also about 165 percent more powerful than the Amazon Fire HDX 8.9.

NVidia’s Tegra K1 processor powers Both the Nexus 9 and the Shield Tablet, though the former’s CPU uses the Denver CPU and is clocked about 0.1GHz faster than the Latter.

While some gamers would like to just stick with the Nintendo DS the They do not care at all about the tablet’s non-gaming features, we have to mention the Nexus 9 has a better rear camera than the Shield Tablet.

The Nexus 9 and Fire HDX Both sport 8MP cameras on Their backs, but the Shield Tablet wears the top selfie cam on its face. Nexus 9′s 1.3 MP front camera and the Fire HDX 8.9 sub-megapixel seflie cam Both fall short of the 5MP shooter on the front of the Shield Tablet.

Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 ($ 429, 32GB Version)

(Photo: Amazon)

The Fire Nets to win in packing the most pixels into its display. It has a resolution of 2650×1600, while the Nexus 9 and Shield Tablet 2048×1536 and 1920×1080 put October respectivamente.

Amazon has launched its own video game studio and has released two exclusive games for its Fire tablets.

These tablets can serve as primary gaming devices, but even Nvidia has Realized there has to be more to the portable device beyond playing games. The Shield Tablet succeeded the Shield Portable For That reason. All three tablets are more than capable of running the latest mobile games, so it all comes down to what additional features a gamer wants to tap. Selfie anyone?
